I recently sent in a post about my Lab having a dominant aggression problem. I got all kinds of advice from all of you, but no one ever brought up the subject of having my dog tested for hypothyroidism, which can cause aggression. I just got him neutered thinking this was one of his problems and I also had him tested. Apparently he does have hypothryroidism, he will be starting his meds soon. Does anyone have any history on this and do you think this might be his aggression problem?, seeing the training regimen I'm on doesn't seem to be progressing as I hoped.
We had just the opposite problem with our Giant and hypothyroidism. He balloned in weight, was very lethargic, would exhibit no aggression or prey drive. Having gotten a crash course in hypothyroidism I learned that it can go either way depending on the dog.
The other thing to keep an eye on is when the dog is treated, keep an eye on the dogs behavior to see if it is on too much thyroid. Thyroid replacement is very individual for each dog. Get regular blood tests to make sure that the dose is proper. The needs of the dog change as they age. The dog can become very irritable if they are on too much. My dog would just lay in the middle of the floor and just whine for no reason. It turned out that he was on too much thyroid.
If you can't be a Good Example, then You'll just have to Serve as a Horrible Warning. Catherine Aird.
Can't speak for my dog, but I personally have hypothyroidism. Found out on a fluke. Anyway, the symptoms are as you mentioned, lethargy, aggression, terrible mood swings, aggression, headaches, weight gain, aggression, depression, super high cholesterol, etc..
Simple hormone replacement will cure it all. I take Synthroid once daily and it makes a WORLD f difference.
Funny thing about the thyroid, most people don't know about it, but it is a very important thing. It controls a large portion of your internal organ function through hormone production and release. If it ani't working, your screwed. A simple t3/t4 blood test can tell you immediately if you have problems.
