I thought this might be interesting to post over here, to see what this group of people thought about it. I'm not so sure I agree that the sound is that of a dog's "laugh," so to speak, because that would indicate that dogs had a sense of humor, which is anthropomorphising.

Very interesting story, I wish they had included an audio clip of the sound as I am trying to imagine what a long panting sound really sounds like… but I think my dog does this as she is pouncing around during play… I always thought it was like a snort but never gave it any real thought or attention. I will pay a little more attention the next time she does this.
I just did a quickie experiment. My dog is laying about 20 feet away. I cleared my throat… she showed no sign of life. I snap my fingers… and she laid listless… then expelled all the air from my lungs in one long HA… and she popped her head up and looked at me very curious and strolled on over to check me out.
After a couple minutes she laid back down. I did all three again… and got the same result.
Interesting post Kristen

I didn't make a "HA" sound, but i expelled all the air from my lungs in a "100 year old guy laying on his death bed" kinda "haaaa" n wow, my dog jumped up and wanted to stick his nose in my mouth n ran circles n then laid down next to me, that was awesome lol.
When they say "laugh" I don't think they mean literally like "laughed at a funny situation" thing, I think its just their best description of what the sound is and signifies that most people can relate to.

Yeah... the sound I made wasn't Ha... as in Ha Ha HA... I guess I didn't explain it very well. It was much more like you discribed and it did get her attention.

Patricia Simonet is a fellow Briard owner and has sound clips of "dog laughter" on her website. You can find them here: http://www.petalk.org/DogLaughSpect.html
She also has a soundclip of a standard pant for comparison.

I found this sound bite interesting. In the long version of it I thought the dog was just panting harder because it was playing with something. You can clearly hear a small, short playful growl about 1/3 of the way thru.
Do I think it's laughing? No, but I do agree it's a happy sound that I've heard lots of dogs do. One of my dogs always pants like this when we play, but especially when he get to go in the car, his most favorite thing.

Jamie,
Do an experiment. When your dog is just chilling out, mimic that sound...breathy "heh heh heh" really quick from the back of your throat...and see what he does.

funny you say that...I've done this to my dogs before this post was up. I noticed this noise dogs do a long time ago and always atributed (sp?) to a really happy dog. I've also heard similar pants during training when a dog 'gets' something for the first time, especialy when I give play time right after the triumphant moment.

My dog responds to all kindsa weird sounds I make tho, it doesn't really matter what it is, I can make a loud high pitches squeeking sound n he'll have the same reaction, it's a "cock the head n run at me to see what the heck I'm eating that's making that sound" kinda look. I think dogs just respond to unusual sounds, doesn't matter what sound it is. Take a deep breath and make a croaking sound while you do it, see how your dog reacts, mine jumps up on me n tries to look inside my mouth or thinks something's wrong with me.
