I have brought a new dog into my home, my gsd will not give any ground, I have muzzled him, brought them together etc. The new dog is an akita, 8 mos old neutered, any answers or will this never work?
I hope you dont mind, but, I have a couple of questions that I need the answers to before I would feel comfortable trying to give you an answer. First, how old is your GSD? Is he intact or neutered? How often was the GSD exposed to other dogs before this one came along? Have you ever watched or owned another dog while you have had the GSD? Where were the GSD and the akita first introduced? What specifically go you mean by not giving ground? Posturing? growling? snarling? etc. Ill be able to give you a more in depth answer (as will others) if we have the above information. I'd love to help you if I can.
Gsd is 3 years old, I rescued him 4 months ago, dogs were introduced at my home. GSD is not netuered, I do have another dog at home, a mutt that is nutered and gets along well with the gsd.
When I said not giving ground, the GSD will tolerate him if I'm there to say no, he growls very deeply and then will turn loose on him, the akita towers the GSD, I think a lot of it is intimidation. The akita never growls or starts the conflict. These are two very special dogs that I would love to keep together. However since rescuing the GSD he is deffinately attached to me at the hip.
I have read a lot of articles etc, I appreciate the info, I have broke and trained a lot of horses and I know different horses just like dogs sometimes need different training methods. I have done everything by the book with these two dogs, what I don't know is I have a german bred GSD, a lot of prey drive etc,but since rescuing this dog I trully believe he thinks he owns me! He is very well mannered, has done excellent with general obedience etc. When we go in public, pet stores etc he always is a gentleman on a lead. But off the lead I truly believe he would attack any dog.
Come on someone with a lot of experience give me some help, I just let the gsd of of his crate, him and the akita did fine until the taller akita put his muzzle over the shepherds back, which we know what that means and then all @#@# broke loose!
Just took all three dogs out for a run and play on 3 acres, all dogs did well, an occasional confrontation with the akita and gsd, but both dogs acknowledged my no and went their own ways. I truly believe there is hope with these dogs I just wish someone with a lot more expertise would tell me what else to do with them?
I could quit and find a home for the akita, but at 8 months old and knowing most people would not respect or understand this dog, that could be a likely bad thing for this dog.
