Has anyone ever fed their dog Great Choice brand canned dog food? I believe it may be PetSmart's own brand. Opinions? Please, no comments about feeding raw etc, I know all about that, I don't want to go into detail on my dogs feeding schedule, I'd just like some input on the Great Choice brand canned food. My dog goes crazy for that food.

Mike - seriously do you honestly think that Petsmart is going to produce a quality canned dog food? They are marketing to the general public. Look at how they have organized their dog training programs - it's rediculous.

I am not a fan of petsmart in general, but there is no mention of the petsmart name on the can, and I am sure PetSmart doesn't manufacture their own dog food. I had just heard that it was a PetSmart brand so am assuming that information is right. My vet is a big advocate for feeding raw, one of my friends has a great dane that is underweight even though she ate as much food as she could each day, the vet reccomended to get her up to weight by buying the Great Choice canned food, not feeding dry food, and giving her canned green beans, cottage cheese and ground beef/turkey. There were 2 "rules of thumb" my vet believes in, firstly, if you get to 4 or 5 ingredients down the list of ingredients in a canned food before you start seeing non-meat products, then the food is a pretty good source of meat for the dog. Secondly, if a can of dog food contains gravy, it means they are putting less meat in the can to make room for the gravy, which isn't very useful to the dog in any way, so instead, just buy cans that don't contain gravy. The Great Choice canned food doesn't contain gravy, its all solid food. I haven't opened cans from other brands, but the only brand I've heard good things about to date was Nutro, which I am now starting to question.
A while ago I was feeding my dog raw every other day, he won't eat alot of the things required in a raw diet, raw chicken and bones for example, so I was feeding him Nutro large breed adult dry food and canned food on the days where I wasn't giving him raw meat just to be sure he was getting what he needed. He started eating better when I switched him from puppy kibble to adult kibble and adult cans instead of puppy cans, so I stopped feeding him raw for a while because I didn't want to mess up his good eating. His enthusiasm for the nutro has long since worn off, which is to be expected from him, he lost enthusiasm for raw meat too after a while because it's "nothing special" since he got it regularly. I want to go back to feeding him a raw diet, but need to replace the stuff he won't eat with a food he will eat. My thought is basically along the lines of "hey he likes this Great Choice stuff" (I believe it was formerly known as "Award" brand or somehting like that), so is that a good enough food to supplement his diet with on the days he doesn't eat raw?
My dog is and has always been a picky eater, he has the same eating habbits as I do ironically... get very excited over a certain food, then eat nothing but that food for a month n I never wanna see the food again - he basically eats just enough to stay alive on most days. His weight bounces around from 64-66lbs, he's not unhealthy or too thin, he's a relatively small GSD, but I'd like to see him at 70lbs, he's on the very lean side. I notice a big increase in drive and energy on days where he will actually eat more food, and he's been licking his empty food bowl all night (the noise kept waking me up till I put the bowl up on a shelf) wanting more of that Great Choice canned food. He was barking at me last night because I wasn't giving him his food fast enough, the only time he's done that before was the first time I made him a raw meal.
I'm gonna run up to Publix this morning and see if they can grind me a whole chicken with bones and all, if I have an easy source for that, and he'll actually eat it, then that's a big step forward in his ability to eat a raw diet.

Hey Mike. I have never heard of Great Choice dog food, and could not find anything about on the web either. It is frustrating to have a picky eater, my female is the same way. I swear she will go days without eating. She won't touch raw, I think she would rather starve. I ended up switching her to Natural Balance foods and she loves it. The frozen raw is a bit expensive, but it contains raw ground bones, whole eggs, vegetables and beef or chicken. It's not the same as doing it yourself but it works.

Mike,
I've always looked at canned food as a condiment. It is generally mostly water and not really a balanced source of nutrition. If you're feeding a balanced diet without the canned and have to add it to get Cujo to eat then that’s fine but it shouldn’t be a major part of a healthy diet
You always get the dog you deserve... |

I finally found the info. Great Choice is now called Authority brand dog food. From the listed ingredients I found, it is mostly chicken meal, brewers rice, corn, and sugars. It is petsmarts brand. Scary!!

One of my dogs took a while to get used to raw. I mixed his chopped-up raw with canned food or even gravy or chicken broth to get him to like it--just enough to cover the meat. If I gave him 'unflavoured' ones he would stop eating. I don't have to do that anymore, I just toss them to him whole and frozen, but it took close to a year to accomplish that.

Hey did you try that Green Tripe canned stuff by the way? It's nowhere close to regular green tripe but the dogs seem to love it.
