Usually, a trainer picks up knowledge by years of dog training, and they'll usually have titles in some venue ( multiple venues is best ) listed on their website.
This thread has been very good information for me personally as I've started searching for a trainer in my area.
I hope this isn't way off topic but if a trainer has a Schutzhund III title (master level), does that mean they worked their way up and obtained other titles while getting to a III?
Anna, I've never trained in Schutzhund but from my understanding. The TRAINER does not have the SCHIII title, the DOG has the title. And yes, there are other titles before it, BH, SCH1, SCH2, and SCHIII is the highest level.

Michael, please keep your attacks on people as public. If you cannot say it here, maybe you shouldn't be saying it.

Thank you. I put the site's info into my own words and I was incorrect - it actually reads: "xxxx and his personal dogs are successful competitors having obtained the Schutzhund III title (master level) and has been very successful in regional and national competitions."
If a more experienced member here can help me evaluate the trainer in my area, I'd appreciate any help. Please PM me and I will link you to the site.

I think they're using that "masters level" to clue in pet people that it's a high title....no one in SchH would use that title, we'd laugh ourselves silly if someone used it.
Competitions at that high level are a good sign that a trainer has mastered the fundaments of real dog training, a good advertisement for sure.

Anna McEntire asked
if a trainer has a Schutzhund III title (master level), does that mean they worked their way up and obtained other titles while getting to a III?
Actually, the dog gets the title. If the dog is HOT (Handler/Owner Trained) the SchH3 title indicates a certain level of training accomplishment. For a HOT dog, the owner has to have put every title on the dog starting with the BH.
Some people purchase already trained dogs for trialing. It takes a certain level of training skill to maintain that dog's performance.
If someone was holding themselves out as a 'Master Certified Protection Trainer' I would expect to see at least a HOT SchH3 dog and the ability to work dogs at a Regional Level or better (USA helper classification or the equivilant in other protection venues).

Anna,
I would recommend starting another thread about your question, answers might get a little lost in this thread.

This thread is entertaining in a warped sort of way, but I think what it needs is some WOE, although Will is doing a pretty good job keeping the insanity in check.
