You are correct!
social is social and group living in any case requires some sort of leadership, and a set of rules of conduct, as well as an established model of conflict resolution. There is a fine and subtle distinction my mind makes between herds and packs; I dont think this would be the right place to attempt to flesh it out thought
It also takes more planned cooperation and coordination to pull of a group hunt than it does to be the group that is hunted.
I am going to have to study Lion prides more closely, other than admiring their beauty and being somewhat fascinating ive never taken the time to look into their group structures.
My cats have a fairly complex set of physical and verbal communications that are clearly red and understood by the other cat. But they dont have the group drive of hierarchy, defense, cooperation and need that I see in canines. When it comes down to it each kitty stands alone.

Dang it! I just read this entire thread; quite entertaining!
I know you're gone Ben, but I wondered if you allow (or recommend to your clients) your dogs to sleep in your bed, get up on the sofa, walk through doors first, etc...
Bet you don't recommend any of that stuff...what would the rationale be, I wonder??
