This story is so tragic. The fact that this man was carrying a gun to the dog park shocks and appalls me, maybe intensifying this is the fact that where I live this is entirely illegal. I'm positive that there were other options. I take my dog to the park (trails where there are a lot of dogs, anyways) upwards of 2 times a day and would never expect to see anything like this happen. I have broken up a few pretty vicious dog fights (not my dogs!) and never once have I ever thought that the only option was death. Yes, it was scarey! but even me being 120lbs was able to get at least one dog out of it while someone grabbed the other. I would much rather suffer a dog bite than see a dog be put to death because of an owners lack of control. This is a truly sad story and so unfortunate as it was completely avoidable.

There are members of this board, myself included, who carry a concealed weapon virtually everywhere they go.
I'm pretty sure that Canadian Police are permitted to carry concealed weapons, just as American Police are. Further, Canada actually does have concealed carry permits. There are about 50 people who have them.
There's a reason our violent crime rate is dropping faster than yours.

I understand that the police carry weapons. What I don't understand is why an off duty police officer would carry a loaded weapon to the dog park. Also, 50 people with a license to carry a firearm is a minuscule number but I do see your point. Almost entirely illegal. Furthermore, if violent crime is dropping because everyone is afraid they will get shot...I guess its whatever works.

Why would he carry a loaded gun? Well... believe it or not, the many, many people he has arrested and put in jail, don't really like him much.
They might even wish him, or his family, harm.

But this guy's not a beat cop. He works at a military installation.
Does anyone remember that scene in The Departed?
DiCaprio's character, playing a cop, is in a therapist's office. She says "I counsel officers who have had to use their weapons," and he laughs, saying, "they signed up to use their weapons!"
I always think of that scene when I read stories like this.

Umm... you think Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, Sailors or Coasties are any happier to be arrested?
DOD Police, and MPs, destroy military careers. You won't just go to jail- you'll lose your job, and all of your benefits. Imagine losing your health insurance because you shoplifted.
Imagine your employer withholding your pay for three months, and not allowing you to leave your house, because you got three speeding tickets in a month.
There is a reason why MPs are housed separate from the general military population when at all possible.
Regardless, DOD Police are in fact, "beat Cops".
They are indistinguishable from any other Law Enforcement Officer, in any regard.
I take offense to the use of a quote from a fictional movie to characterize Law Enforcement Officers.

I know a woman who used to be a social worker. She quit her job because she had people following her everywhere she went. We are in Massachusetts so there are places where as a civilian you cannot bring your gun, like restaurants etc. So she quit. It was just too dangerous. She had three small children herself so just imagine living that kind of a lifestyle.

I could have taken offense to something you said earlier about my brother being the only LEO on the planet not to have read that neat little book, and taken it to be some kind of knock. I did not, so I hope you'll reconsider the offense you've taken here.
Your points are well-made and I am not disputing the philosophy behind concealed carry at all times. In fact, as a result of this story I am much more inclined to finally put a handgun in the family budget for 2011.

My husband is not even a cop, yet is responsible for putting people in jail every single day, some of them very bad.
People who he is then required to testify against in court.
He worries daily about being followed home, threatened, or harm coming to me, or the kiddo.
He takes the necessary precautions to protect himself and us, but it is still a very real worry to anyone involved in law enforcement.
