To me, Buddy Holly and Elvis fall into Golden, or Early Rock, or Rock & Roll. (The Who is Classic Rock, for me.) I guess we all have our own definitions, and for me, Classic Rock (with caps) is album-based and a little later than either of these two songs.... and wouldn't have come into existence without them.
But this is nothing but making categories for ease of conversation. Because I definitely agree that those two are seminal, roots-of-rock, classic-with-a-small-c, rock-would-not-exist-without-them songs, both of them.
Ahemm... I ain't gonna comment about little Ricky being rock, except to say classic pop? Maybe? Nah... I wouldn't stop at Neil Young, either, when there's stuff like this out there;
Well, we may have differences about what's Classic and what's classic. Setting aside any "official" definitions, I was just describing a general idea. And I certainly meant to include Hank Sr. in my time frame, but now that I'm thinking, I guess he was a little earlier than the mid-sixties. I think I did say "roughly" or "approximately," though. It's hard to remember exact dates for those of us old enough to be talking in geologic time.
Speaking of classic country, how many country stars have had a hit with this one. I guess a true classic can even transcend into other genres, like, say, jazz...
