I used to shop a couple favorite markets where I could get cheap chicken backs regularly and then they went up to $1.19/lb. Ridiculous!
Why I went so many years w/o one, I don't know, but I finally broke down and got a grinder from Northern Tool. If you watch, they often have them at $10 off.
Now I just watch the weekly market ads for whole chickens. Someone almost always has them about $0.50/lb. Just picked up 20# of them at a Costco 2-for-1 deal. I'll grind it all up (and throw in some veggies, supplements, etc.) and freeze them in 2-serving ziplocks and I good for almost 3 wks. The grinder will probably pay for itself in 6 mos. or less.
This is gold! Thanks! The so cal barf has good prices and a pick up area about 35 min. from me, Chicken backs are only .36/lb here. I can't get them until Feb, but am putting in my order. I know someone who makes regular trips to creston, and am looking into the yahoo group. At these prices i'm not feeling quite so bad...I was gonna make this work any ways, it's just less painful this way! LOL

Just a few more question, for now . Due to his recent stomach issues, should I use a slow transition, or go cold turkey? If I transition him, I will be forced to give the cooked food (chicken & rice) along with some RAW. I always heard not to mix kibble and RAW, does the same apply to home cooked? He seems back to his normal self, and I want to keep it that way. Should I start with meaty bones, or use some boneless breast for his first meal/meals?

Just an update: Leonidas is doing very well, is transitioning to the RAW nicely. No sign of digestive upset, perfect, small hard stools. AND he likes it! The first chicken I gave him he licked at for a while like he wasn't sure, but it didn't take him long to start chomping away. I have been removing the skin so far to avoid any upset. I did notice him swallowing what to me looked like too big of pieces, with bone, but they seem to have dissapeared with no issues. Thanks again for the support.

Well, I was forced to start with leg/thigh quarters for now. I have some different things ordered, but it is taking a little time. It was nice that there was a thread about people feeding leg quarters while I was having my questions, so I felt ok with it. Plus I figure any meat is better than kibble.
