I agree with Betty. If I slip up and add too much of something, my dog's stools get loose and look similar to the pics. But I am not a professional, I can only offer my opinion.
Michel, its important that you stay calm. I know it is very frustrating, overwhelming, and emotionally wearing. Your pup was starting to improve, so I would NOT make any changes. Keep doing what you are doing. Stick to the plan!
Ok fair enough.. But the idea is that nothing has changed since the dolthene.. Would it take more than 2weeks for stools to firm up? They ve had the same consistency for 2weeks!? That s y I feel sthg s wrong that s all.. Makes sense no? Either way m gonna give him some time to recuperate with no meds for a couple of weeks. Maybe give him som ultraflore to reinforce his flora (they re probiotics right?)
Michel, if you had numbers to look at you'd be able to tell if there is an improvement. So far it looks like a case of "on man's log is another man's pudding". Tests like CBC and chem panel would measure Karly's condition. There are also specific tests for different pathogens, like Salmonella. If you are worried about those you may ask your vet to run any specific tests. Four your own peace of mind. You may need these tests more than Karly does just so that you could stop worrying too much. I'd definitely be going nuts by now.
I would see what his body does with the meds out of his system. Might take a few days for everything to work its way out. Either way if it were me, I would not be making ANY changes to the diet.
karly's back home!
checked his stools today. they re better than yest. i m just gonna have hope and give him some time to recuperate.
vet thinks all i need to do is stick to the diet and feed him as much as i can (RC) at least till he gets better.
we re at the next stage now:. that s where i need your advice:
karly eats 3 times a day. he can't or actually isnt really interested in eating more than 3cups of RC all in all (approx 1cup per feeding).
at his age now he should be finishing around 5cups to be healthy (that said for him to get fatter even we should be looking at least at 5cups (no?)
so the question is: how can i get him to eat that much?
i know that when i put him boiled burger meat, he eats till he explodes. i cant start mixing meat in his food from now! what do you guys suggest i should do? i cant starve him, he s already very skinny and he s a pup. a trainer suggested i add a maggi cube with chicken smell. would that be fine to do?
i feel m already tinkering with the diet and should keep putting him RC till he just eats more..
With all that this poor little guy has been through I would think that as long as he is eating, holding it down, and its coming out the other end in a normal manner, that you shouldn't worry about how much right now..
My dog went through a phase at around his age that sometimes she would eat 5 cups of food a day and other days she would probably eat 2. And she was perfectly healthy.
Plus, you don't want to push him to eat too much and unintentionally cause another flare up. I'm no expert, but I know when people have had GI problems they usually don't return to eating large amounts right away. I'm assuming animals aren't too different when they have gone through a long bout of GI distress.
Once he has been normal for a week or two you could try mixing in a little cooked hamburger or a scrambled egg to get him eating with more enthusiasm.
What did the vet say about your concerns over Karly's weight and amount of food?
When does he expect Karly "get back to normal"?
You have to formally assess Karly's condition every day in order to take as much guesswork out of it as possible:
- Is he properly hydrated? Check skin tonus, is it hanging loose? Is the coat dull or shiny?
- Is he gaining weight? Weight Karly every day at the same time, before meals.
- Does he feel less skinny? Pinch the skin lightly between your fingers, how much fat do you feel underneath the skin? Same spot , same time every day.
- How does he look overall? Take pictures every day, same time, same position.
- Is appetite good? Energy level?
Would be nice to find another pup, same breed, same age and compare them. At some point Karly should catch up and look and feel pretty similar. Is this your first pup? Would be nice to be able to tell what is normal at particular age and are there any concerns.
