Thanks Connie! I'll be reading these!
I'm having the BEST time w/my GSD pup! She is the smarted dog I've owned.
It's easy to forget, however, that she's just 12 weeks old,
and when she is doing GREAT with sitz, platz, heir - then
all of a sudden just ignores me after our mini-training
sessions, I'm tempted to correct .

That's great that it's going so well! Great that you do mini-sessions, too. Short and sweet and happy and fun is the way I love to do basic ob. with pups.
One little "trick" I like is to begin and end every little session on an up note. So I start with something I know the dog can and will do, so s/he is praised, and I end the same way. That way you're *both* eager for more next time, and there's no frustration or irritation carried over.
I love training pups in obedience. Maybe some day I will have one! (I have all adults.)
Good going, Martin!
My question is about puppy nerves. My 5mth GSD thinks he's the king of the yard, until last night!I had gone outside with my hair in a towel,it was dark and the pup didn't see me go out of the yard. When I attempted to open the gate, he barked and growled. As he did this he wet the concrete. He didn't cower or back up.After I called his name he came to me and quit barking. Is this a sign of weak nerves? or just puppy insecurity?
I have a Borzoi & an Akita (both breeds have VERY high prey-drive & are quite mouthy as pups, yet also have naturally "soft" mouths when taking food by hand) -- As your puppy goes to bite you OR your apparel, first SQUEAL like a stuck pig (!!!) then immediately give a FIRM "No Bite!" command...
The loud, high-pitched squeal lets your puppy know it HURT you (this triggers the bite inhibition response that young littermates learn while still with their dam) and the serious NO BITE command teaches puppy that "Mama don't allow no owner bitin' 'round here" <:-)

If I do that with GSD puppy he bites harder!!! I just always have a toy around to stick in his mouth (usually all the time), all my GSD's which were all high drive dogs seem to grow out of this stage. Last thing you want to do is nag them.
And it doesn't extinguish prey-drive either -- my Borzoi excells at open field coursing (where a sighthound runs down & kills live game) and my Akita is a "champion" mouser <:-)
But I've never trained a protection dog -- Are the puppy etiquette rules different in that case?

I agree with you about basic manners & stuff. I was thinking about how many people say "no" this & "no" that to the point where dogs start to tune them out, & "no" means nothing!(which nobody implied they were doing!). It just popped out, sorry. I just like the easy way out, which for me, is to stick a toy in his mouth until he grows out of it!
