There's restaurants in Orlando that allow dogs to dine in their outdoor seating areas, if it's banned statewide, then theres areas such as Winter Park that just choose to ignore it anyway because it's very common over there. I heard something about Orlando's downtown restaurants no longer allowing it, but nothing about Winter Park suddenly saying no. I took my dog dining at a restaurant in Winter Park once, it wasn't a big deal, I was the only one with a dog there that afternoon, other than having to keep his tail out of the sidewalk he did great, he was in a down/stay under the table the whole time, he fired up at someone about 40ft away coming down the sidewalk for god knows what reason, but I told him to knock it off n he was fine again, he was a year old I think at that point. I've only done it once simply because it's a hassle, having to park etc, but it wasn't a bad experience. People take their dogs to hang out outside starbucks alot too while they read the paper n have a coffee. Perhaps because it's just a "normal local thing" for the artsy folks in that part of town to choose to do, rather than a big emphasis being placed on it. Theres alot of stores in Winter Park that allow dogs too, they put a water bowl out front as a sign of "we allow dogs in here". It's probably the only part of Orlando that is truly dog friendly.
Perhaps the emphasis on permitting it will inspire the idiots to come out of the woodwork, just like there's an emphasis on PetSmart and PetCo being the only stores people can easily take their dogs into, but if nobody makes a big deal out of it (which is too late based on that article) it's a non-issue.
I remember when I first got Cujo, I took him everywhere with me because he was small enough for people not to care, he'd come into my car dealer's waiting room with me while I got an oil change done, I'd take him to the tire place to get new tires, all the small local kinda stores didn't really care about my dog being with me. Some people were scared of my dog purely because of his breed but that's about it. I was standing outside of home depot with him one day when a friend ran in to get something, n a lady called over to me "he's not going into the store is he??"... I told her "no just waiting here for someone", she nervously walked past us (i was a good 20ft from the door!) n then looked back n called something like "he's a good looking dog though!". I need to start taking Cujo places again, but he's not a small puppy anymore n I just don't like dealing with all the people staring at my scary dog. Even walking in the park downtown is annoying to me because of peoples reactions to a german shepherd acting like I don't have control over my dog n thinking he's gonna lash out n attack everyone when he's just sniffing the grass or heeling.

They work pretty good down in south F. L. A. We have a bar/rest here in Denver that will allow you to bring your dog in. The dog has to be well behaved, these guys don't play around at all. but, it is nice to bring your dog and hang out. I have seen up to 5 dogs in there at once and not a peep out of them. I have seen dogs acting up get the boot. There is no warning, you are asked to pay your tab and take the dog home whether you got your food or not.
I am smarter than my dog, your just not. |

I frequent a local pub that allows dogs. I enjoy spending the long cold rainy afternoons in the pub. . . .sipping my brew by the fire. . . .with my dog sitting at my feet. It's Goddamn therapeutic after a stressful week out in the real world.
It's a place to go hang out and socialize with your dog and other people. Not a place to go hang out while your dog socializes with other dogs. We ignore other dogs and that is generally the norm.
Besides, my big boy Grenz is a huge hit with the ladies and always draws the right kind of attention, wink wink.

Wish more people were like you! I have a couple of nieces & nephews who are so out of control, I won't go to a restaurant with them. The parents seem to tune them out, but they talk really loud, run around/under the tables, and this is even at pretty nice restaurants. It's embarassing to be with them.

I'm fortunate to have a number of outdoor places to go with my dogs. Love it! Just means they get my money and I get to have lunch and a beer!

I too agree with Polly. I travel on business to Europe several times a year, most often to Germany. I see dogs sitting quietly beside their owners every time - whether it's an outdoor cafe in Munich or in the Plaza Athenee in Paris. I've never seen an unruly dog ever in Europe! Why is that? Here, however, I sit on the patio w/my GSD at Starbucks and, low and behold, there's a problem almost every time. One man had two pitbulls w/o a collar or leash on in his car. He saw me sitting w/my coffee and just opened the car door and let them out! Both dogs jumped on me so he put one back in the car and it jumped out of the window and came at me again. They weren't vicious at all (one was only 6 months old). They were just very unruly and certainly untrained. I yelled at the guy to get his dogs under control and he left. Others tie up very aggressive dogs while they go in to buy their coffee leaving the dog to snarl at everyone who passes by. Hmmm...why am I still going there?? Maybe I'm the idiot! Either I hang out at the wrong places or I'm just unlucky but everywhere I go, I see unruly, nasty or just plain untrained dogs. As much as I would love to be able to bring my dog to cafes for lunch or whatever, I don't have confidence that the dog lying next to mine will be well behaved - unless, of course, I'm in Europe.

All,
There are few dinning places in nyc where dogs are allowed. I have seen with my own eyes. I love it. It is another thing that the dogs I saw in those resturants were very well behaved. I have taken my dog in Barnes & Nobel.( Part of training...) I had no problem. There are few stores on 5th Avenue in nyc where I have seen people with their dogs. At least in nyc I don't see doggie poops in every block the way I saw in Paris.
Life style in Europe is diff than life style in USA, so I don't think that the comparision is that simple. Hells, I work all 5 days a week for over 12 hours a day and my friends in Germany and France take vacation every week for 3-4 days a week. Go figure.
Just my 2 cents.
