I had to go look for the book I'm thinking of. It's "Know how to train your guard dog". One of those know your GSD, know your Wiemaraner, etc series from The Pet Library. Earl Schneider, editor. Definately 60s era, but generic, without an author name.

Did you ever read "Fireside Book of Dog Stories"? This was one of my 1st books, & one of the reasons I fell in love with dogs. I can remember my dad reading to me from this book before I was old enough to read! I still have my dads' copy of the book from 1943. It's a real treasure to me.
I have one of Koehler's books as part of my training library but his methods are out dated in my opinion. I also don't go for the pure positve "training," but use a combination of rewards and corrections geared to the individual dog. I hold off on actual corrections during the teaching phase of a command.
Not to sound too much like a complete novice, but don't you ever need a little of the old "Yank and Crank"? Especially on a 10-month-old that KNOWS the commands to 'sit' and 'down', but every once in a while just looks at you like you've just landed and that he doesn't even know you <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> BTW, OED may have the stone tablets, but I have my copy in papyrus, and it's a signed original!
