So is there a concensus re: rabbit is good for dogs (as long
as they are skinned, so no fleas=no worms)?
I could look in my books tomorrow, if you want. I think the result might be that, like chicken, it's good to be switched off here and there for variety (some fish, a little of this and that.....).
But I will look, and also check on the bone-meat ratio......but I would think it would be perfect, since wouldn't it be a staple in the diet of wolves in many areas?
Give me a day. (It's tax season! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />
Unless --- I think Cindy has mentioned rabbits as being good dog food, and she knows canine nutrition.
Rabbit is a great food for dogs... I use it in rotation with chicken, pork, beef, venison and fish.
It's great for dogs that have a weight problem, it's VERY low in fat. If you are going to feed it to pups, I would use it once a week or so, growing dogs need more fat on a regular basis than adults.
It tends to be expensive and if you are feeding whole rabbits, and they are older the bones can be a bit hard for some dogs to digest. I got some older retired breeding rabbits for very cheap from a local farmer, and one of my dogs routinely urps up undigested bone from those. She doesn't have trouble with the young rabbits as the bones are much softer.
I get them skinned and gutted, with the liver, heart and lungs intact. They do sometimes have the head, which continues to creep me out(we have a pet rabbit, so I try not to make 'eye contact' with my dogs meals LOL)
Cindy I'm sure that little pet rabbit is praying you and him stay on good terms. Hah!!!!!!!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Also, this is PURELY personal and I cannot offer authoritative substantiation: When I feed an especially lean meat to my dogs, leaner than whole chicken or chicken backs, then I add extra of the distilled salmon muscle oil that they get every day.
However, this would not be a daily practice for me. I don't know enough yet about how much cholesterol, etc., from land-animal fat dogs need.
