Well, in perspective among "alternative bulldog" breeders, there's a lot worse out there. This breeder does disclose the breeds and bloodlines used in the mix, and how large the initial genepool was and how many years/generations are bred off the foundation stock.
It appears to me he picked out all the weaknesses of the breeds involved and put them together. If I were creating a breed of supreme working dog, I sure wouldn't want the short nose, underbite, overly stocky build and dark coloring. But what do I know. Just another "breed" that can't make the work. And the photo of the dog flying off the aframe looks very doctored or the dog is just incredibly small. Maybe just my perception.
"I figure with what? 400 breeds recognized by the FCI there should already be a dog breed out there without having to create one just to start your own registry."
who needs to open up these FCI or AKC gene puddles anyway.
IMO opinion we all need to be open to opening up the stud books of the breeds, and get a more accepting attitude of the increased heterogeneity that will follow...
on these dogs: they aren't my cup of tea, and the website is stylistically not my thing: but:
they seem to be more athletic than many oversized FCI or AKC bullish dogs;
they seem to have some impetus to work far more than many of the other FCI bull type dogs, if no doubt lacking many qualities of working herd based breeds;
whatever failings this guy may or may not have, he is at least aware that he should be testing his dogs for working ability in terms of drive, biddability, and physical ability.
I'm not saying his decoys are perfect, or he has perfect dogs, but hey, he's doing a few things right, or at least setting the right sort of targets.
The english bulldog is certainly a disaster, and in comparison these dogs look good.
it would be interesting to see if he can get good hips.
They're not trying to breed the best protection dog or sport dog. They're trying to recreate what they feel the Bulldog was in the 1800s. That aside, I don't understand the animosity and dog snobbery of this board sometimes. <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
i agree with barbara. the bulldog was a great dog that was ruined. these dogs look healthy, athletic, and sound. you could do a lot worse. i'm all in favor of any breeder who is trying to bring any breed back to full functionality. read the guy's page on his breeding goals and philosophy. aside from his truly poor taste in graphics and design, i think he is one of the good guys.
