Thanks for the replies folks. I think I'm grasping at straws. My dog is almost certainly allergic to something but didn't really want to believe this so hoped Cesar Millan's comments would bring a deluge of experiences from the board on how frustration could be the key. Unfortunately, probably not and I'm back to the allergy thing <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> but thanks for your input.

Just to clarify from my post...I don't think my dog licked his paws out of frustration from not being able to "sow his wild oats", but I do believe he did it more from not being stimualted enough during the 2 weeks that I couldn't fully exercise him, and after that, it kind of became a habit for him to do it, and he would generally only do it when he was a little stressed.

Wendy, "sow his wild oats" was exactly what my original post was looking for. Wondering if there was a connection between that and licking of paws. So thanks for the clarification.
My dog gets exercise three times a day - walks in the morning and after dinner and almost always a third time in the middle of the day my teenagers take turns either playing football with him or taking him on a long walk. On the days my teenagers are both not available, I put him on the treadmill at lunchtime. And if that wasn't enough, he now has a girlfriend (6 month old working line GSD) he plays with about 2 times a week and by play I mean they tear ass around the yard till they're both exhausted.
So in my case, I can't imagine lack of exercise is the problem. I wish it were the problem though, that would be so easy to correct.

Judy,
does he lick when you're present, or does this only happen at certain times? Like if you're not home or something else that may stress him out a little bit?
Like i said, Tazz only licked himself when I wasn't home, so i just associated it with him having a little seperation anxiety...and a bad habit he picked up from when he was confined for the sprain. He did stop it eventually.
I does sound alot like some sort of allergy to something for your dog.

Ugh. I know. It does sound like an allergy, doesn't it. I'm working on that end and yes, he does lick his paws in front of me. I work from home so it's quite easy for me to keep track of him. Early morning and bedtime seem to be the times he's most consistent w/the licking but in the end even that isn't all that consistent. I have some people helping me with the allergic end of it still. I'm afraid I have a long road to travel. Thanks for the input.

Sometimes licking at a joint (and toes are joints too) is nerve based. The nerves are irritated and firing signals - that means it burns. According to human arthritis specialists Salmon Oil and B Vitamins can be helpful to decrease the irritation at the nerve endings.
One of my dogs would occasional lick at one front foot. Finally found out that he has a toe on that foot that can be easily dislocated. When the nerves are irritated because it's just been dislocated again (even though it's easy to pop it back) he licks. Low doses of NSAIDs also help at times.

I have been reading about that first mention recently! BTW, salmon oil and E (sometimes the Bs) are helpful anti-inflammation agents for more ailments than can be listed here. Omega 3s in marine form are (and I mean this with heartfelt respect and the desire that everyone hear it) the new Vitamin C. I will never again be without distilled fish oil for me or for my dogs.
About paw-licking: Yes, it can be caused by frustrated energy, anxiety, and several other underlying conditions, including the ones mentioned above.
Most often, it's caused by atopic dermatitis (allergies), and if it's followed by or presents with secondary ear infections and/or skin pruritis on the body, then I'm afraid that allergies are pretty definite, IME.

I'm not a health professional -- just seen and worked with a lot of canine allergy.

Connie, what about hydrocortisone cream? Would that work for Judy?
My vet had recommended it to me when Tazz (my other dog) had sores on his leg from where he was licking. He suggested putting the hydrocortisone cream on his sore since it has anit-inflammatory properties, and would help with the itchiness causing him to lick the area. I did that and wrapped the sore in some gauze so that he wouldn't be able to get at it, and it seemed to help him. Plus I only did that when I was home and could keep my eye on him to make sure he didn't lick it right off.
I know it won't cure the allergy, if thats the case, but would it at least help with the itching that may be causing him to lick the areas???
