Saw the thread. I know that Tracy Bowling at Ventosa Kennels (Scotland Neck, NC) trains for sheds. He may have some useful info, if your inclined to inquire. FYI~

In my mind you've answered the question of which response to use. Retrieve! Short retrieves, teach drop it, then primary reward with ball. If he enjoys that as much as you say, shouldn't really take too long. Then start placing the antler and letting him do short searches. I'd start downwind. As he progresses increase the difficulty level.
