Although it doesn't always happen this way, a dog could become infected with heartworm anytime it gets bit by a mosquito. Heartworm preventative works by killing the very young larva in your dogs bloodstream each month before they mature and become a problem. Since we don't have mosquitos in winter here in MI, I don't give my dog heartworm meds for 3-4 months in the winter. But in warmer climates they need it year 'round K-9 Knitter

I just ordered the "Shock" book as we are planning now for our first (hopefully) litter over the winter. We have learned so much already from many sources, but especially Leerburg, about feeding our dogs in a healthier manner (Raw!) etc. Our decision to breed is not a lightly made decision. We take our responsibility seriously to the GSD breed itself, and also our responsibility to our beloved bitch, the stud, and the hopeful litter. All of these pups/dogs are important to us. Should I not give her these shots? I just want to make sure that one is enough. I was looking over my 2 year old males's health records and I can't believe that my breeder gave him the 6 week shots, then my vet gave him 3 more within the next 3 months! I opted not to revaccinate a year later when I got his rabies shot, much to the displeasure of the receptionist.

END I would wait for the 12-week shot, and then no boosters. Other opinions?

MANY people agree that over-vaccinating has triggered a wave of cancer, allergies, epilepsy, and other chronic disorders. Over-vaccinating and extremely inappropriate grain-heavy food, IMO, are both traceable to financial greed......... and both responsible for a lot of chronic illness and misery.
