I have always used Prairie grass hay for my dog houses just because it smells nicer than straw. I broke up the bales and put a couple of flakes on the floor and a flake against each side and the back. I have four big dog houses and it takes me two bales to fill them. After putting the unbroken flakes in, I just broke up all the remainder and stuffed the houses completely full. Then the dogs could burrow in and "customize" thier individual beds.
Straw (and hay for our horses) all comes from the same local farmer that stores it in it's own building. They don't have animals on their farm anymore. There are so many horse-people around that they can make their money just in hay. I'm VERY picky about what I feed my horses; everything from this guy is really clean and fresh. That's good to know though; thanks <img src="http://www.leerburg.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
