how would other breeders handle it? you mean "good" breeders? they would tell the prospective new owners just as soon as the injury happened AND it was apparent the pup was seriously injured. i.e. before shipping the pup. they would have offered to send a different pup, or a pup from a future litter.
at the very least, they would have wanted to hold onto that pup until they were certain it was OK, or until they knew the ultimate outcome of the injury, so that if they did sell the pup, they could do it with full disclosure.

First I wouldn`t overreact just yet. Wait till you see the orthopedist`s report but keep in touch with the breeder. I`m 250 pounds and I`ve stepped on puppies already. 99.9% there okay. You check them and give them a day or two. I`m not a breeder but I would say you should at very least be reimbursed your expenses.

I realize that, but was wondering (if the pup ends up not being OK), what they would do with the pup (keep it, put it down, or give it away with disclosure). Just curious.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes. My wife is very upset by this whole thing as she, and I, have grown very attached to this puppy. We're trying to handle this situation with our minds and not our hearts, but it's very difficult. I would like to pick the phone up and lay into the breeder, but that wouldn't be the right thing to do.
All i can recommend to anyone is to ask for daily/frequent updates and even video of your puppy on a weekly basis right up until the point it's delivered to you.

I suggest that if this breeder doesn not do what is RIGHT, you can let us know who that breeder is?
Just for future reference...

I stepped on a pup once. It is terrifying but also....can be common! I felt incredibly bad and it was a definately a good 'step' right on the pup and his back legs/hip. I took the pup to the vet right away and had it x-rayed as I wanted piece of mind. Everything was fine...or at least nothing broken. He limped for several days as well.
I also talked to my homeopath and told her what happened. She had me give the pup several homeopathic remedies that would help with growth plates, muscles/tendons etc.
This pup is now an adult, and certified hips and elbows...no problems.
If nothing was broken I am not sure how this would effect the hips later on? So the bigger question to me would be the original x-rays of this pup and the diagnosis then.
I have not stepped on a pup since!!! Thankfully.

I also had an experience with a pup with broken leg - the baby-gate fell on him (mom knocked it over) and his back leg was broken, in the upper leg bone (femur?) - not the hip/pelvis area. He was only 2 weeks old, eyes just opening. He had to have a little "cast" - popsicle stick with bandage around - for a few weeks. He turned out fine, but because of the growth rate for very young puppies, and the bandage preventing the leg from moving, the leg was much skinnier, and turned out a bit when he was due to go to his new home. The vet said it would get stronger and end up 100%, but I still made sure the owner was notified from the beginning, they had the option of backing out of the puppy at any time, but they did get him, and he turned out 100%. Of course all of his vet bills occurred before he left for his new home and I paid them.

I have not stepped on a pup since!!! Thankfully. There's hope then since the dog now has certified hips and elbows! I can only imagine how horrid you felt stepping on that puppy. But the good news is that there is hope.
Steve, did you get the 2nd opinion on the x-rays yet?
