We're planning on doing x-rays in 6 months when he turns 1 year and I, too, will be very interested to see what they show. Not hoping for anything miraculous but I'll bet they look a little better.
Well, I hope so, but what happens most often is that the xrays don't change on the Vit C alone, yet the dog clearly feels better. The Adequan, however, has been known (anecdotally) to make some pretty significant improvements. Adequan PLUS Vit C has shown even more promise. Good luck and I'll keep my fingers crossed!
we have a 1 1/2 year old female GSD with FCP and OCD. She was administered Adequan about 4 months ago and it helped her tremendously. In addition to adequan and vitamin-c which has laready been mentioned, we give flexicose (similar to syn-flex, little different formula) and also give hyularonic (sp?) acid caplets. I know some vets will inject HLA directly into dysplastic joints, but it can also be given in lower doses in caplet form. Our vet calls it our joint cocktail- adequan, flexicose, vitamin C and HLA. I can't think of anything else to give.

Thanks so much for the information on HLA, Steve. I hadn't heard of it so it's one more thing to read up on, ask about, and possibly add to the mix. I'm game to try anything that might help.
There's a product called Legend out there that's Hyaluronic acid; I haven't used it b/c it's an intra-articular injection, and I'm not comfortable giving those, and couldn't find studies involving dogs (Legend is a horse drug) so I stuck w/the Adequan, since my boy's really on it for prevention purposes. I'd check it out more thoroughly for a dog who shows symptoms, though. Didn't realize it came in tablet form; thanks, Steve.
Hi new here,
The breeder of my first BSD recommended 1500 - 2000 mg of Ester-C for life in her
diet plan. My homeopathic vet recommends the same along with 400 IU vitamin E
several times a week. I raw feed (RMB) and home prepare meals for my 4.5 y.o.,
7 month old and now deceased (in Aug.'06) 18.7 year old Belgian Shepherds (Groenendaels). Proper nutrition and the avoidance of kibble means vitality and
long life in my book. My 18 y.o. would have lived longer, I believe, but the town
and the vet forced a rabies vaccination and would not give her an "age exemption".
She was totally mentally alert and aware the day we had to have her euthanized, but
she was neurologically impaired/paralyzed due to the vaccine. I believe her diet, vitamin regimen, Glucosamine/Condroitin, Omegas all aided in her longevity.

Welcome! And I'm so sorry about you senior having been forced to have a vaccination that did that to her. Not that it helps at all, but you're not alone.
I too believe that appropriate food is a huge factor in health. Good for you, and again, welcome.
