Anita,
I copied and pasted this from the post I wrote a few days ago or so (I am being lazy and did not want to type it over...hee hee) But I would really recommend changing to something safer.
Sticks are scary, I had to transport a dog that was playing with a stick and actually punctured his eyeball...ICK
And another dog just this last summer jammed one into the roof of his mouth and it had to be surgically removed.....
Dogs that usually like sticks transfer to the lengths of pipe or gum bars pretty readily, or at least that has been my experience.

ANita
The thing about sticks is that well here in Vegas we don't have many trees but the sticks my dogs are most likely to pick up or play with are long and skinny and a bit sharp, but I guess if it's a thick stick not too long I can't see why not throw it for retrieve play?

Is that PVC pipe as an alternative? I could see that going through an eye, too, and being crunchable by a hard chewing dog - which would create sharp edges and points. I think I'll go for the gum bars - any other ideas?

My dog LOVES the football but only when the guys in my house throw it. I'm not joking, when I throw it, he just stares at it and won't move and looks at me like, "And you're wasting my time, why??" . It's really embarrassing. Male chauvinist pig!
Oh yea, and he loves the sleeve - the one Leerburg sells for PP training. We use it as one of his toys. (He's not PP material).

PVC is hard and I use it with my dogs that DO NOT chew but like to pick up sticks. Sometimes the dogs like the way the stick feels and PVC is hard like wood. I use 2" to 3" PVC and stay away from the smaller stuff. If a dog cracks or breaks it, it goes in the trash. I have never had an issue. The water line hose or garden hose works well for dogs that chew on the return. I do not let any of my dogs have anything that I know they will chew to pieces when they are left unattended. Also, I forgot to mention this before, I get our old firehose from my fire department and cut it into lengths and sew the ends shut. Works great for tugs and fetch and the best part is that you can throw it in the washing machine.

Enter the Tennis Ball Launcher....hee hee
This is exactly why I got one. I throw like a "girl"....
If Doug or anyone else is out throwing something for one of the dogs and I tap on the window and hold that up, VOILA, I get the "Get your A** out here and let's play some real fetch look" Its GREAT.

That's pretty funny. I'm going to have to buy that contraption. If for no other reason than to save my arm! I looked into it once but walked out without it. Mainly because it was a little pricey. But, I'm getting tennis elbow from throwing the ball to him. Since I throw like a girl too, I've been using a tennis racquet to send the ball a decent distance. But, as I said, that's having its affect on my elbow.

The launcher I have is like a big slingshot (at Cabellas or any sporting goods store with dog stuff)....but a tennis racket is great too. I am just afraid with the way my dogs jump around I would whack them in the head with it since I suck at tennis too, hee hee but that would probably only happen once .

I've been using a tennis racquet...
See, there's your problem - you need a "racket" from WalMart's; not a 'racquet' from Bloomingdale's. No wonder your elbow hurts! And your wallet...
