Brent,
I am with Michael on this one, in most cases what you need is a dog that will bark and chase folks away. I too have to work some night and away from my home, I have a 11 month old GSD that will make most folks think twice before entering my home with just his bark alone, the others that he would not chase away with his bark are the ones that I have a shotgun for :-). My understanding is that a PPD dog is one that requires a very skilled handler and one who can continue to keep up the training, which means you will still have to find some one who is experienced with maintaining the level of trainig for one of these dogs. In most cases a 80 to 90 lb dog barking and raising heck will deture the bad guys, the ones it does not I am not real sure that the PPD dog will be all that will be required. You are really going to need some experienced folks help you find a good PPD dog, there are many on the NET that are not what they say that they are(meaning trained PPD), so be really careful, find a good helper/trainer of these types of dogs and have them go with you when you want to really look at one. In most cases these dogs are going to be fully mature and not pups to 24 months of age. You might want to try and send a PM to Ed or Will and ask them for some insight here. If you can find a good one it will cost you lots of dollars for them and then to maintain the training will also require lots of dollars as well as time.
Just my .002

I never like it when someone say's "most people don't need a ppd", to me, it's important that the dog will bite if you need it to, it gives you extra time if something bad happened, just read the paper or watch the news, bad things happen to good people everyday. I like to be the judge of what i need. I don't consider myself a "skilled handler" by any stretch of the imagination and i have a ppd, no problems, but if there's something i don't know all i've got to do is pick up the phone to talk to a pro, that's the point i'm trying to make. Brent, it's hard to get the info you require on the net, you need to talk to a true professional or at least people that actually own a dog or dogs that really bite, JMO

I'll take a chance here, and I"ll agree with Al's statment that I don't like it as well when people try to tell you you don't need a PPD.. I was told the same thing, the big dobie you have already was enough, I knew I'd need one eventually was going to get one from a member on this board, when the bottom fell out.
Nothing like having less than 8 hours warning, having to pack up and leave for safety's sake.. Moving 1000 miles, away, sending my teen to live with his father permanently, pulling my youngest out of school, and homeschooling her, to make sure I can guarantee her safety.. As of right now, I have 2 PPD's in the house, they are friends dogs, but they are with me for now, plus my own dobie/shep and I never have less than one PPD with me within 5 feet of where I am indoors or out..
It's been a crash course in handling but nothing too bad, been around these kinds of dogs before.. All 3 dogs get along, took a bit of work, solid pack leadership, rotating crates, suprisingly they are all males as well.. At night one ppd is by my bed, another sleeps by my daughters bed, and my pet dog just sleeps in his crate with door open.. I am still going to get my own PPD's shortly but at this point I can see always owning one..I will not be run out of my home and life because of a lunatic..
Some of us have our reason, and mine is the safety of my family and being able to sleep at night..

Wayne will get you what you want in a PPD or Sch, but they are great dogs and excellent lines but very expensive.. but you do get what you pay for.

Brent, did you find a dog yet?
Rick we saw another dog from Kraftwerk few days ago at the aprk where we take our girls for fun and a couple that were a home invasion victims few months ago bought a female from kraftwerk, she is a schutz2, very nice looking dog , aloof to strangers but very confident. This family loves her, they were telling us they had alarms ect. and still were victims of a home invasion and that had they had a big dog barking the teenagers that did the home invasion would have not gone through with it.The home invasion would have most likely not taking place.Who really knows but they seem soo happy to have this dog, and their kids feel safer at home.We were thinking of you when they told us their story and where the dog came from especially.Anyways I thought I'd share that with you..

Brent,
Please take what I'm about to say in the way that I mean this - but you've got to do a lot more study and homework before you even consider looking for a PPD.
Getting a PPD is a big step which usually requires at least some life style modifications on your part. You need to really know what you're looking for or else you run a *huge* risk of getting taken by an unethical breeding or dealer.
There are only a handful of people qualified to really train true PPD's and the wannabe's out-number the quailified by 20 to one, so please - beware. Stop and learn what you actually need and then closely check references.
And when you go to look at any possible dog, you need to take your own helper to test the dog. If you rely on the seller to show off the dog you're already in danger of being taken.
Just my two cents worth.

I need to clear this up as another poster was mildly confused and contacted me via PM.
So to be totally clear, I was in no way saying that a dog from Kraftwerk couldn't become a PPD. I've competed against several of Wayne's dogs and have no complaints whatsoever about their working ability.
But I will say that the Leerburg dogs that I've been brought for PPD training were without a doubt the best dogs bred in the USA.
And yes, I'm absolutely serious about that.

Not all, I said most. That I've seen, anyway.
