...and if you happen to be armed, your instincts have to be very sharp to draw your weapon (hopefully it's armed), remove safety, aim and shoot at least one of the dogs in the 3 second time frame it takes for them to get you.
Let me say first, that I am a police officer in Memphis, and ill pit bull ownership is a big problem here. I could go on for days about why people here have pit bulls, and the reasons why they don't need them, but I will spare you all...
Richard is right in his assertion that it takes some skill to shoot a dog, ESPECIALLY a pit bull. Two of my partners, who are crack shots (one is an NRA and FBI certified firearms instructor), have both had run ins with pit bulls on duty. One got out of the holster and got 3 rounds off (the dog charged him from about a distance 20'), with not one strinking the dog; the other got out of the holster, but was able to get away from the dog without having to shoot. He said that there was little chance that he could have hit him if he shot (aside from the fact that his field of fire wasn't clear). Fortunately, he was able to get away from the dog while the owner corralled him.
All that being said, I agree that the dogs will take the brunt of the heat, not his idiot owner. Truly a shame, and so characteristic of Memphis pit bull ownership. (Should anyone be interested in my rant about pit bull ownership in Memphis, PM me and I'll be happy to oblige you).

More people in the United States die from dumb owners with guns then dumb owners with dogs!
Well, at least our government trusts us with guns - it's called being a citizen.
I always feel bad for the sheep in other countries that are "subjects" - but it's their choice to live under a government that won't trust them enough to own a firearm.
But some people like living in a "nanny state", I guess.
Concerning the topic of being able to actually hit a fast moving target, proper firearm training is vital in a dangerous situation. Why not spend a week learning from the pro's .....and watch your personal security takes a big leap.
I can highly recommend the following Firearm Academy's to learn defensive handgun training:
http://www.gunsite.com/
http://www.thunderranchinc.com/
Either of those could well be the best investment of a week that you'll ever make.

And Scott...yeah, it's gonna be about the dogs. And the owners bad conduct will hardly rate a by-line in the press.
Man, I hate the media with their little "agenda's".

Thanks for the input Marcia, How's that socialized medicine thing working out for you guys? Hope you don't have to wait too long for basic care. Heard the weather is wonderful up there this time of year. Fuel Tax not too bad?
LOL! (I'm sorry, can't help it, but that was funny)

More people in the United States die from dumb owners with guns then dumb owners with dogs!
i kind of get what you're trying to say, but i still disagree with you. people who own high-drive/aggressive/high-energy (trying to avoid the grossly misused term "dangerous" here) dogs and don't put the effort into proper training and maintenance are the major factor behind dog bites.
the only reason firearms were even brought up in this thread is because if he'd had one - and been skilled in it's use - it might have saved him from injury. your basic stance of not wanting anyone to have a gun in no way helps his hypothetical situation at all. arguing about the criminals with guns who cause problems in the USA is completely irrelevant and makes you out to be a gun-control chimp (which, from what i've gathered, won't get you very far with the audience on this forum). gun control is, in my opinion, the same knee-jerk reaction to a problem as breed-specific legislation is.
getting back on topic, i hope that sonofabitch owner is taken apart. i really don't agree so much with the civil side of it, personally i'd like to see much much harsher penalties for people who's dogs do atrocities like this, and for the damn newspapers to cover that side of it.
instead of the bone-heads concentrating on the dogs that did it, we need to send a clear message to the dipshits who own "aggressive" breeds because they look agressive: keep your dog under control, or else.
i think pits are a wonderful breed, as are other "aggressive" breeds, and those dog breeds are suffering because of the irresponsible actions of a few.
