The wonderful article you posted helps to explain why. IMO, a titer is a very useful "tool" as a part of your dogs overall health evaluation. Key to this is understanding what it truly does and does not represent.
How is it a useful tool?
A quote from the article:
A titer test does not and cannot measure immunity, because immunity to specific viruses is reliant not on antibodies, but on memory cells, which we have no way to measure

Before I was exposed to Leerburg last year, I followed my vets reccomendations regarding vaccines.
I kept an open mind, educated myself on the subject, and will never again vaccinate unless required by law......are there any loopholes to avoid rabies that doesn't require one to "fly under the radar" concerning local dog law?

i wish...
i'm doing exactly that right now - mostly because i haven't had the money to drive out to the nearest vet to get the shot. i will be soon, but grudgingly.
p.s. not saying there isn't, just saying i wish there was for my state.

None that I know of. Where I live the rabies vaccine is required by law at 6 months (pretty sure), but no way will I do that. I may be fined for waiting till Lear is 1.5 yr or so, but don't care. I'd rather pay the fine. Had I obeyed the law with my last GSD at her age and with her kidney disease, she would have been dead, I'm almost certain. I never got her a rabies vaccination.

I've always done the rabies shots when required, but nobody has EVER asked me for proof of rabies shot. I don't even know where the tags are, nobody ever asked me when I went to the emergency vet for a broken leg or anything. I don't know how rabies is supposed to be enforced??

Rabies is loosly enforced here through pet licensing--our local ordinance requires dogs within city limits are to be registered and licensed. You can pay yearly, every three years or five. When licensing expires, an updated rabies verification is required.
Rare indeed, anyone else asking about updated rabies shots...oh, though, if your dog by chance bites someone, you bet that person will be asking for papers/proof...if no proof, your dog is likely "going down".
Anyone know of good studies about effects of rabies vaccines?

I think a lot of what will happen to your dog if you DON'T comply with state law depends on what state you live in.
Last year Wisconsin passed a law that a letter of exemption from a vet would be accepted instead of a rabies vaccination.
In other words, if your dog has something going on that would make the vaccine detrimental to his/her health (in the eyes of the vet) they will type up a letter for you that would be accepted for licensing, etc. I know people who have dogs on thyroid meds or have allergies that have used these letters. It's not perfect but it's a great start.
Yay for Wisconsin.
We needed to ship a dog that had been recently spayed, and NO way did I want her vaccinated only a couple weeks after surgery and then stressed by flying. Our vet wrote an exemption good for a year.
Some states will euthanize a dog if it bites and there is no proof of rabies vaccination. That's a slippery slope, not sure what I would do if I lived in one of those states... most likely I would move. LOL

My base Army vet has opted for an extra round of puppy parvo shots with the German breeds, he says that for some reason they seem to need it. I am not an expert, but the man is medically responsible for the base K-9s, so I follow his advice. And he can sit and tell you every last problem with just about every K-9 he has ever seen, GSDs, Mals, and Dutch Shepherds.

Kevin - I do not want to offend you on a personal level.
While you may not be an expert I am and your Army Vet is an old school poor excuse for a Vet.
If your Vet was an expert (which he is not or he would not be doing this) he would know that giving a dog additional vaccinations does not make IT MORE IMMUNE. Thats just a stupid position to take.
Then the comment on additional shots "BECAUSE OF THE GERMAN BREED" is just about the dumbest thing I have ever heard. I wonder what school of Vet medicine this guy came from? Does Nigeria have a Vet School?
The Army has never been known as a leader in the field of K9. Not in training nor in medical care.
Way to often Vets are given credit for being way more intelligent than they truly are. Just because a guy has a certificate with DMV hanging on the wall does not make him an expert. It means he went to school - now if they had certificates for "COMMON SENSE" I would be more impressed.
