In a week or less, you'll wonder how you could have been so concerned about something that your dog accepted in about 2 minutes.
Go ahead and tell people at work, but don't be surprised if you get a few glazed looks. After years of raw feeding, I don't say much to people any more. Most of the time, I get a blank stare like I was trying to sell 'em snake oil.

.....I did buy some natures variety canned food a while ago for portability to take on a road trip with me, but my dogs had very running poop with it. I guess they could adjust to it if I fed it more often so they are ready for the canned stuff on trips, but I think I might try the natures variety kibble next time I take a trip n see how they do with that.
Good luck! Not that you'll need it Mike, I was just on the Nature's Variety website and they have freeze-dried raw medallions for travel.

Never discount the satisfaction one gets from observing a dog using it's mouth the way it was designed and watching, and of course, hearing the destruction.
Once you graduate to whole, unskinned rabbits, you'll see what I mean.

How about 30 seconds...LOL
He took a sniff and then shot a What-the-hell-is-this look at me then grabbed a patty out of the bowl and dragged it across the floor. At this point the proceedings stopped as I had visions of salmonella all over my house so I cut up the patties and he pretty much then ate the entire thing in 30 seconds.
It was a real Life cereal "he likes it...Hey Mikey!" moment.
Of course this is going to be a call to arms with my 3 cats who were already feeling marginalized with the advent of the dog. Now that he's getting the good stuff guerrilla tactics and fearless feats of feline cunning will no doubt be employed.

Congratulations, Sarah! You will never be sorry you made the decision to go raw - nor will your dog!
Two things I can think of to mention to you: With your marrow bones, remember to scoop out as much of the marrow as you can because it is very rich and could give your pupper the scoots. Thaw the bones out and scoop out the marrow with a spoon. Then you're good to go. Also, when the pup is done chewing the bone and leaves it alone for a good hour or so, pick the bone up and throw it away. You don't want it to dry out because then it gets like cement and could possibly chip/break a tooth. I usually give 1 to 2 bones a week - that way it becomes a special treat.
The other thing to remember is that your pup will probably drink less water now that he is eating raw. There is more moisture in raw, plus the fact that he doesn't need to "wash down" dry kibble. Just wanted you to know in case you worried when he wasn't drinking as much.
Again, congratulations - keep us posted on how it goes.
As you think, so shall you be. |

Well I was going to say the exact same thing, I pick up the marrow bones the next day ,as for the marrow though I don't touch it, I give them the marrow intact , I've never noticed a problem with it, my dogs get plenty of exercise so I think the extra calorie does not hurt them, most of the marrow bones I get are never that big and if they are they can never get all the marrow in one setting, the big ones last a few days for them.Maybe it depends on the dogs activities.Congrats Sarah! I think after a while you'll figure out a menu you can go buy for your dogs and try new things.Good luck!

Thanks Jan & Angelique!
I'm glad for the info on the bones. I was wondering how long they should be left down. Will he actually eat it or just gnaw on it? I've noticed just the beginning of tartar on his beautiful new adult teeth so I'm glad the bones will do the job of cleaning them.
I'm going to add the RMBs for dinner this weekend and see what happens...I think it really will be very satisfying watching him go at it

It's very fun to watch (and listen to). I always tried to treat my dog like a dog and not humanize him, but I never respected him for the animal he is 'til I started raw feeding. Glad your 1st day went well.
