Novartis didn't mention any monitoring such as you have to do NSAIDs. Blood tests should be done when an animal is on Rimadyl, Deramaxx, etc. to make sure the liver isn't being damaged. I did ask about continuing the loading dose for another month (thinking if 1 month was good, 2 months would be better) and was told NO.
I think it really is for the owner to assess how often the medication is needed. Sadly, there comes a point when no medication works very well and the options then become surgery or PTS.

I hope it goes without saying that the dog is on daily long-chain Omega 3 EFAs from marine sources (that is, salmon oil plus E).
IMO, this is something that complements all RXs and nutraceuticals when it comes to OA and other inflammation-based ailments.
MHO is that there are very few dogs (none I know of personally) who won't benefit from fish oil. (Dogs on blood thinners or dogs who are allergic to fish oil -- that's very few dogs.)
Sometimes when the ailment is serious we can forget that one of the most potent anti-inflammation agents we have is a food product.
The thing that is so annoying to me, is I have read several different well known books on the topic, and I've compared the things they each recommend, and cod liver oil is a common ingredient in the healthy pet diet. Books include Grow your Pups with Bones, Dr. Pitcairn's, and a couple other holistic veterinarian books that I can't find quick to write. agh!
