Many snake bites dont prove fatal simple because the snake dosent actually inject any venom into the victim. If the snake is suddenly disturbed and strikes in self defense it has no time to 'load' itself. There have been incidents of humans being bitten and going into shock or dieing of heart failure simple through the stress of being bitten even though no venom is injected. If however the dog stands off the snake for a minute or so and barks at it before attacking the snake has plenty of time to prepare itself and will inject venom and and probabaly kill the dog. Most snakes in Australia are very poisonous and even if you get the dog to a vet in time the dog will still suffer CNS damage and probabaly wont be much good for work anymore. Terriers are well known for killing snakes, not many make it to die of old age as the snakes win ocasionally.

Normally w/ my dogs, they do bark at the snake for several minutes or so before launching an attack (just long enough for me to get shoes on and run out the door...get a shovel...) However, Copperheads are FAR less deadly than the snakes in Australia (I admit...I'm a Crocadile Hunter junkie <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> ).
Your right there, Austrailia is serious business on land and on water. That's one place that seems to naturally specialize in culling the gene pool (for humans too)
I couldn't even begin to think about how many things are game for predators there, I'm sure they even have bugs that can kill you. LMAO!
Awsome!! i had almost the exact same question, just didnt get to ask it first. im from southern illinois, and will be moving to texas next month, and was wondering about the snake bite seriousness. around here there are very few poisenous snakes to speak of not really any closer than 2 or more hours away. thanks all
