Thanks for the info Alice. How much is the cost to feed a whole young fryer vs leg quaters? There is another site here that was discussed (raw dog ranch) where the lady fed mainly leg quaters. I joined this group last year for discounted raw orders, but it doesn't look like they offer whole young fryers. pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/corawfeeders/database?method=reportRows&tbl=56
the price very much depends on where you live and what is locally available.
chickens are usually the cheapest thing i can buy here in montana, but i know they are far cheaper in the southeast part of the country than they are here.
watch for supermarket specials. whole young fryers are often used by supermarket chains as "loss leaders"--meaning they sell them at their cost or less than their cost just to bring customers into the store.
when i see those sales, i order a few cases at a time.
some brands are more palatable than others, if your dog is picky. ben won't touch foster farms or hutterite chickens--i'm guessing they brine them. but he will eat sanderson's farm chickens, no problem. so now i get all my fryers at albertson's, since they carry the sanderson's brand.
if you have an albertson's in denver, see if they offer specials on these. chicken legs alone are NOT a good staple. the bone/meat ratio is wrong, and the bones are too hard.
We do have albertson's here. I will have to price the young fryers and compare to other stores. My dog isnt a picky eater and the corawfeeders group gets their chicken from "red bird". How much does Ben weigh and how much do you normally feed him?
last i weighed him (about 9 mos. ago) he was 150 lbs. i strongly suspect he's undergone a growth spurt since then, because his collar is getting tight and he's eating a lot more than he was. he can easily eat 6 lbs. of food a day.
he does come from a line with a fast metabolism, though. he is not an "easy keeper." other mastiffs i've known get by on just 3-4 lbs. a day and weigh 30-40 lbs more than ben does. of course, he also gets a ton more exercise than they do.
