yes you two, and now i feel bad....
No, Ann, you reacted out of concern for the puppy, and so would I, but the constipated part was posted before I could log on. So YOU got to sound mean instead of me.
That's what happens here: We respond out of caring for the dog, and that's what makes this such a good forum.
Jonathan will appreciate that.

You have to be careful ... if they're crying it is for a reason.
Today, when my son and I and the pup were passing the baseball around, we accidently got the pup in his front leg. He cried for non-stop for a LOOOONG Time, not just a quick YIPE. We felt so bad, he did finally walk it off and appears to be okay, Thank Goodness. He cried so loud and long, at first we thought we broke his leg. OUCH!
Glad to hear he is doing better now.

Ann - don't feel bad. Konichiwa appriciates your concern for him . I didn't explain in good enough detail, and you were RIGHT for making sure. The welfare of the dog comes BEFORE the dignaty of the owner. Don't ever feel bad about making sure the dog is cared for first. For that, I would have to say that YOU are a true expert.

Unfortunatly, I don't ahve very much money, so the only dog food I can afford is the Dollar General Small Chunks and Bones. I know dried food is bad, and I'm sure that the cheap stuff is worse, but with my limited income, I can't afford the high priced things right now. Even on training him, though I want a well trained dog, I am not financially able to pay for dvds or videos on how, so I instead search over the web and try and find free obedience trainign advise and stuff. It's tough being a first time pet owner AND having an extremely small income.

Dear Jonathan:
Being a pet owner is just like being a parent... you have a responsibility to take the best care of your pet that you can. That doesn't necessarily mean that you have to spend a lot of money on toys, books, et cetera. But you do have to make sure that you can take care of the basics for their health and well-being, and to me that means food, exercise & doctors appointments.
If you've taken on the responsibility of a pet, then you need to be able to make sure that you can handle those things.

Well when I got the puppy, I unfortunately did not know much about dogs. I had the leash, collar, food and water bowls and crate from about 3 years ago when I had a small adult dog, and had no idea about the raw food diet, so I planned on using $6 20 pound doaller store bags, like the lady who gave me the pups used, to keep it on a consistant diet. I am interested in seeing if I can afford the raw diet, one lady told me she got her meat at Wal-mart for 50 cents. for a growing German Shepard pup, how much will food run me every 2 weeks appx.? (I get paid every 2 weeks.) ANd what kind of meat should I buy for him (thiniing of meant $2-3 per pound kind of has me worried financially)

Something to think about Jonathan, is even though a good quality dog food will cost more, the dog will eat less. Not to mention he will be heatlhier (less vet expense). You will still be paying more but it's worth it. I know it's not considered "high quality" but the Costco (kirkland) brand dog food is pretty good quality (much better than what you are using) and you can get a 40# bag for less than $20.

Also, you could start with the better-but-still-inexpensive kibble and enhance it for VERY little cost.
I disagree 100% with the advice you sometimes hear about sticking with one food forever..... I believe that the best way to cover the nutritional bases is with a little variety.
This site (and others) gives ideas for upping the variety, freshness, and quality of kibble:
http://www.dogaware.com/dogfeeding.html#addfood
As Mishele says, you can really do pretty well with a better choice of low-cost food, and if you add some inexpensive fresh ingredients, your dog will be a lot better off than one who gets a national brand that's made of cheap grains and not much else.
