Play fetch with a long line, make sure you really get his attention for his ball.Don't play fetch when you're puppy is flat.Does he get a toy through out the day? Take 'em all away, play should only be when you are in the game. You know too you can play fetch in a hall way first( no leash), and throw the ball at the end of it( hallway), put your self on the floor and throw your ball at the end of your hall way, it should bounce right back to you, make sure your puppy is there with you and keep throwing the ball as it bounces back to you( for a bit don't let him get it), your puppy should be very excited to get it and he can catch it( when you see he is VERY interested) and tug on it a little and if he lets go take it and start bouncing it again, wait again to let him catch it so make it hard a little bit and then let him get it again.
See if that helps you...
Getting him to "Go GET It" was the hardest part for me. Once he got the idea to go get the object, getting him to come back to me was a lot easier. Then teaching the Release/Drop was a struggle, but he learned that if he didn't give me the toy, then the game was over.
I started with throwing TREATS for him to GO GET IT. Then we progressed to his toys, using some of his favorites, of course, like the ball on a rope toy.
Once he picked up the toy, then we would praise him and clap our hands and call him back to us.
Then I make him sit, then I tell him to drop/release.
We started this inside ... so I didn't use a leash to make him come back to me.
It was very important though to work on one thing at a time and then progress to the next step.
Now he loves Fetch ... of course, sometimes when we're outside, my son and I will play pass, so it has become Monkey in the Middle for the Pup.
They love to play, so as long as the training is fun, you should get there.
Jason, your new pup is so freaking cute, he's making me cry
I WANT ONE TOO DAMNIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good luck with him. He's the most adorable puppy on the face of the earth. You know that right?
Better not call homeland security... they'd probably confiscate little Panzer for being so dangerously cute and cuddly and fuzzy and AWWWW!! Not fair, puppy fever
Thank you! He is a charming little guy. He already sits whenever he comes to me and I have not used a leash yet because he comes everytime hes called (upon which hes greatly rewarded) its so nice.
My female ISIS (now 14.5 weeks) was and is way more independent and has to be on a leash almost all of the time, but she will learn. I bought a 30' cotton line and we work heir(sp?) and bring, she's getting better.
