I've had a couple people tell me that they would be concerned that a BC trained for herding would be able to do a search if there was livestock in the area. Or that after doing herding any other type of reward is not enough for the dog.
While I understand their point, and the seriousness of the dog being focus on the reward to find the victim, I don't quiet agree that that has to be the case.
... Does anyone have any thoughts/opinions on this?
Mara - there is a woman on the INTF-1 FEMA USAR team who trains BCs for USAR with great success. She also owns a business training and utilizing BCs for goose removal/deterrents. She would absolutely be the person to ask this question of. Ask Annie Schaffer and Gary Hay of NISAR for her contact information and I'm sure they'd gladly provide it.
You're right to investigate this issue thoroughly. The thought of cross-training to this extent scares me to the point that I would never do it, but I have no direct experience with it.
