jeannette your very correct don't forget the green tripe.great info here please read Billinhurst books it will answer all your questons about raw diet, also for oil try safflower organic oil gives a nice sheen to coat and helps skin in dry weather
I am a firm believer in eliminating grains from the diet. I beleive that a large percentage of dogs are allergic to grains and is the cause of yeasty ears, chronic UTIs, hotspots, etc.
I also think you should switch from potatoes to yams or sweet potatoes. There is no goodness in that white stuff (starches).
The number one thing to think about when you embark on the BARF diet is variety. You must - I can't stress this enough - add variety to your dog's meals. Organ meats is also important -- try heart, liver and tripe. Oh yeah, and don't cook anything...
I have tried to feed the raw veggies with the meat squished through so that they will eat it but they forrage through and still pick out the meat and leave a fair amount of the veggies behind. I have started giving the veggies a quick heat in the pan (almost wok style) with a little water and a beef stock cube and this is doing the trick.
I have cut out the veggie oil but i can not find Salmon oil anywhere! Can anyone tell me what type of outlet stocks such a thing?
they have been on the Nutrience dry food for breakfast for a bit over a week now and combined with the non-processed dinner the skinny one has put on a nice amount of weight.
I have also heard of puttine Kelp in the diet for skin/coat etc... but i am unable to find it where would i find this also and in what form would it be powder or granuals etc...?

Hi Julie,
Try a health food store. Sometimes the fish oils are stocked with the supplements and sometimes they are stocked with the regular cooking oils...it really depends on the store
Thanks, I have not tried a health store yet. Do you think i would be able to get the Kelp from there too? Does anyone know what form it should be in???
You should be able to get kelp at your local health food store as well, but Ed sells it all ground and ready to go in his catalog and here on the site.
hi julie,
you may also consider hemp oil, this is what
INNOVA uses in their dogfoods. They claim that
hemp oil is 80% composed of the omega essntial
fatty acids in a perfect balance. I'm not sure
where you can find it,maybe a health food store.
bk4jon, one thing that has to be considered is that meat has less omega3s than it should because of the decreasingly natural diet of the animals that we are feeding to our dogs. Animals that are allowed to graze have a higher omega3 content. With this in mind, I have decided to give Auster flax seed oil since it is higher in omega3s.
Perfect balance in one food sounds great, and I wish I could afford to buy all organic free range meats for myself and Auster so they would have a higher omega3 content but it isn't going to happen anytime too soon .
Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong. I don't have the Schultze book here to look it up and college has fried my brain.

MMMMmmmm Hemp oil..... i can just see it now.... Ruby (hypo dog) streached out on the couch with the munchies eating cookies in between naps
But really, thanks for the advice. Will keep eye out for it but prying it out of the hippies hands could be hard Sorry, cant help it. use to live in a area with LOTS of "alternative" folk...better than watching TV!
