Hello,
I'm feeding INNOVA puppy food to my 5 month
old pup. I would like to give some raw meaty
bones also but don't know what kinds(chicken or
beef, turkey?) and which would be safe for her
to chew, she is teething now.
Thanks for the advice
From what I've read all of the above. Just make sure you don't cook any of them to make them soft. You can use rabbit, deer, etc., or probably even dog or cat, lol (joking/but you could) No pork though.
Some of the members on the board I think grind the bones if that would make you more comfortable.
If you are feeding bones don't feed rabbit bones
as the larger bones in the leg break off very brittle and sharp even when raw. Most people that feed rawdiet now don't leave the skin and hair on
and this is how wild animals get around the problem of bones as the hair protects the dogs intestines as it moves through the dog. Deer bones are ok but if your dog is an agressive chewer watch that he doesn't splinter the long bones. Mink bones aren't a problem if you take the heads off (sharp teeth). Beaver bones don't
cause any trouble either.(by the way - most dogs just love beaver and will eat it above all other meats). If you know any trappers this can be a good cheap source of very healthy meat as most beavers raise themselves organically and don't do drugs
Auster likes chicken backs. If you are wanting to give recreational bones then buy big ones and store them in the freezer between chewings (the marrow can be a bit rich for some dogs). I wish I could give more advice but I'm new to raw feeding too.

Sorry if I offended you on that last post Brad -it was not my intention. But - I used to raise meat rabbits and have been jabbed by rabbit bone ends many times and they are deadly sharp. I am not trying to be expert but I have fed meat of all varieties for many years to a kennel of dogs and so have some trial and error experience with meat feeding.
Don't think of it at all. I'm not offended, I should've read the post more carefully. I didn't want you or the other members thinking I knew what's best. I just didn't want to give the idea that I did.
Take it easy,
Brad.
for a 5 month old that is on kibble I would just Stick with beef bones. Knuckle, shank or knee bones are fine. Have the butcher cut them so they will be at least 10 inches long. Don't be surprised if the dog gets diareha the next day, it's normal. It will take time for the dog to get used to the bones. If you decide to switch to a natural diet later on the adjustment may be minimal or maybe not at all. I also refrigerate or freeze the bone when I take it away from the dog. You might get a couple days out of it.
