A question;
When you say you wake up to his whining; does the whining actually wake you up, or is it more like you wake up and he happens to be whining?
If it's the second, it could just be anticipation/excitement that he will get to see you soon. (Does he hear an alarm going off?).

Lol. This has turned into a funny thread. Um no. My dog's whining definitely wakes us up. She sleeps on her doggie pillow in our room. When she has to go, she let's us know. It's usually around 7 am. When I started her on raw, I made the mistake to feed her as early in the evening as when she was on kibble. She pounced on my side of the bed, with a look on her face saying "I need to go out NOW!". It was 5 am. I fed her 2 hours later the next night.

Jenga wakes up around 6:30, and I can ignore him until he figures out that I'm awake...then he wags his tail furiously in his crate, and the sound of the tail hitting the wire crate sides is just awful. At least it's cute.

My 6 almost 7 mos gsd gets up at 5:15 or so every morning. I think it's partially because it's light outside and she hears the birds and etc. and partially because she does need to go. During the week, when she does the wimper, whine and rattle the cage routine, I do get up because she is still very much a puppy but I take my time getting her out of the crate. She usually makes the mad dash for the grass to pee but then it's okay - where is my ball! On the weekend, I will let her out to take care of her business, but it's back into the crate - sometimes w/ a bone sometimes w/o a bone until I am ready to face the world.

If the puppy wakes me up whining I always take her right out.
However, I always have them outside on leash and I take them straight to the bathroom area. If they don't need to relieve themselves, they go right back into the crate without play and without food (I don't even talk to them or look at them, I keep it as boring and as sterile as I can).
They quickly learn that there's no fun (or food) involved in night trips so they don't bother waking me up unless it's urgent
I don't know if this is a foolproof method, but it worked perfectly on my 3 guys

Lol!! Carol, you're too funny
My dogs also give me their sleepy "what, you want to go out NOW??" looks if I wake up before the sun is up. They're usually flipped upside down with paws up in the air (and snoring away) and don't even bother getting up.
I just poke them and nudge them and they'll eventually get up and follow me
They're so cute when they're sleepy, especially the puppy (it's the only time I can kiss her face without her biting me, HAH!!)

This IS a funny thread!
My dog has me trained and he doesn't even have to whine. He just stares...stares and paces.
He had some strange health issues when young and since then I have allowed him to sleep in the same room as me for monitoring reasons. He stands at the side of my bed and stares at me until I wake up.
Somehow this works....I open my eyes and two little laser beams are buring holes in my face
His pacing at night and in the morning also wakes me up. Thought the hardwood would be a great idea for the dog fur situation, but the click, click, CLICK is enough to drive me insane!!! His nails are not even long.
He will actually make himself barf if I don't feed him in the AM he is so conditioned to eating then, and so READY to eat. It is tough to ask him to wait, when we get up at 5:30 to 6:00am 5 days a week. Of course he will happily go back to bed AFTER being fed. Little bugger

Haha, this is pretty weird for me, since my pup loves to sleep in.
I try and wake her up after I get up and showered and dressed, and she takes her time, giving me a groan or grunt, taking her time stretching, but after I get her out for a few minutes she's perky and ready for the morning.
She only woke me up once, and that was while I was still housetraining her, and she let me know she needed to go.
she holds it until morning now, though.

I find the barf comment interesting, as I've been told that sometimes dogs will vomit (yellow bile) from having an empty stomach.
