Well, we are posting in the electric collar training section....
I too would assume that a post in the Leerburg e-collar forum about "the video" would be a reference to the Leerburg e-collar video, but that really is kind of an assumption on my part.
Anyway, here's "the video" :
http://www.leerburg.com/318.htm
Right Connie! That and this part also: "2) When Ed is teaching the dog to "OUT" in the video, the dog obviously...."
I'm sure there are more e-collar video's Michael, but not in this forum.

Oh my god, just one session for about five minutes in my backyard and what a difference??
I worked on the recall, and really only had to nick her three or four times, then she got the point that it I wasn't about to play keep away with her.
Brought her to the pool with some bumpers (where she loves to play "KEEP AWAY" and only gave her one nick for refusing to come" I can't believe how great of a tool this really is???
How long you guys do your first session? I did like three or four min, played two ball, three or four more min, then got in the car and went to the pool..
Total of about ten min today where we were actually training??
thanks for the info??

Adam, when I was getting my dog conditioned to the E-collar, and IF I was using the prong for corrections at that time, I put the prong higher than the e-collar (under the jaw). Rarely did I do that though since the e-collar was just worn 3-4 times a day for a few minutes to a couple of hours at a time. So mostly I put the e-collar under the jaw, higher than the prong.
2) ....I was thinking that you should move the tug around and let the dog just "stew" over not being able to bite it?? .... Adam
For the exercise Ed was teaching in that video, it probably wouldn't be appropriate to be playing around or building drive with the tug, just simply "out" to demonstrate the use of the e-collar, and then "bite" on command (dog was trained as a PPD and knows the pachen command).
Adam, didn't you do any conditioning with the e-collar first? In your first post you mentioned you had just viewed the DVD, and your last post said you were already using it.

Yeah, I did the conditioning with the collar because I had read on the internet somewhere about the taking on and off for a couple of weeks (can't remember where). The gentleman that helped me with the purchase at Gander Mountain also gave me a few tips to get ready while I was waiting for the video.
I also put it on the dog for a couple of hours, a few times a day (for about ten days or so). I just happened to have the past two weeks off from work and worked out nicely for getting her ready and conditioned.
The only thing that I did different from ed's video was the on/off and reward with food for conditioning.
When we put the prong collar on Bella she knows we are going for a walk, ride, play, or outside to do something and she loves it? That is basically her reward for putting on the e-collar, and she disregards wearing it now completely. I basically put on the prong and e-collar a coupe of times in a row, a few times a day for about 10 days.
I believe that the reacton I got out of here for the past week or so has been very consistant and I believed that she was ready after watching the video about four times (yesterday and this morning).
Worked very well this afternoon, but I'm not gonna do anymore til tomorrow. She's tired and I don't want to overdo it after we were in the pool for a couple or hours today??
I hope that this cleared it up a bit?? Opinions on right/wrong will be greatly appreciated??

Sounds perfect to me, Adam. You were one step ahead of the game
Regarding putting on the prong, my dog also felt it meant going for a walk, so we worked on that for a bit, just by putting it on and not going anywhere.
The e-collar...best BEST $300 I ever spent. Amazing tool, just amazing. Had I known, I would have bought it sooner, 6 months ago (he's 1 yr old now). Would have saved me a few lost marbles .
He can now be in the house (without having to be in his crate), and not chewing everything or getting into everything in sight. He has actually learned to lay on the floor without getting up every few seconds! Today, he actually took a nap outside of his crate. A true miracle.

Adam, sounds like you are doing fine! Glad you did the conditioning. After reading your first post, *before* you said you conditioned, I was thinking, "oh no". I'm glad you did it the right way. Don't forget to keep a long line on her until she's been though more training. You want to make it crystal clear to her, that YOU are the one nicking her. Not the ground, or bees, or anything else.

She is very Long line savvy?? I think it is from the fact that I did the recall on long line with a prong as in the Basic Obedience DVD, so she was very 50/50 on her returns, and very low percentge if she was distracted at all.
I know that she is only nine-months old, but I do expect a fast return when called for her safety, others safety and to keep myself sane??
IS NINE MONTHS OLD ENOUGH TO START ALL BASIC OBEDIENCE ON THE ELECTRIC COLLAR?? I WAS WONDERING HOW LONG YOU WOULD EXPECT A PUPPY OF 9-MONTHS TO HOLD A DOWN-STAY?? OR A SITSTAY, OUT OF MY VIEW??

Hello everyone,
1st post on this site, tho have been reading it for a long time..Excellent site..
Adam, tho this thread is 2 months since last post, I thought I would give my opinion.
In reading your posts, it appears that you have started and are using the E-Collar the correct way. After the dog has been accustomed to wearing/using the collar, then you can advance on the many uses of it.
In regards to your last paragraph above, my personal expectation of the pups I train are that at 9 months they should be on atleast a 30 minute sit stay/down stay out of sight of myself.
Remember, the more repetitions that the dog sees, the more and faster he will learn.
those that hide will be found, those that run will be bitten |
