Mike,
I was stationed at Ft. Bragg for most of my state-side tours, here's what I did:
Head out to the Fayetteville SchH club and hang out with those guys for a bit. They've hosted Bernhard Flinks for a seminar recently and I've trialed many times at their club, they seemed like good folks to me.
Here's their website so that you can contact them: http://fayettevilleschclub.com/
Next, there's an AKC Obedience club, I'd check them out also:
Cape Fear Dog Training Club
Secretary : Debra Hanowell
Address: 1105 Chestnut Wood Dr.

The Tarheel folks are big into PSA, I don't know if that's your cup of tea, but if so, their club/kennel has already been mentioned in this thread.
Hope that helps and I hope to see you on the field someday!
I am new to the Raleigh area as well. I contacted 5-6 of the closest SchH clubs and apparently no one wanted anything to do with me. I guess its because when I explained to them in each email that I had a rescue GSD and I was looking to do protection work for fun and it would be practice for me when I get my working line GSD. Oh well. Fortunately, I stumbled across http://www.labontecanine.com and the trainer has been great and understood what I wanted to do and how much we could get out of my guy. So we've just been having a lot of fun and I am very excited to see how much he can accomplish!
Mike Jerry Bradshaw of Tarheel does and has done quite a few seminars at Ft. Bragg for handlers. He is very use to dealing with the military there. Jerry is a good trainer, and has tons of dogs consistantly that he is training. He has a training school, but being full time military that will cause a problem, However, you should talk to him about an apprenticeship. See if you can learn from him on your days off and weekends, in exchange for helping him at his business. The other alternative is to buy you a Mal and join his PSA club. Though it's a little expensive. Like $1000 a year, plus, they only train on set days, your schedule certainly won't be that flexible, so contact him and ask about learning in exchange for offering help where he needs it. Thats a fair trade. I was at Bragg for a while, and I wouldn't contact anyone other than Jerry B. The schutzhund club there are die hard sports folks. I even spoke with one from the club and they looked at me like I had leprosy when I mentioned about wanting my dogs to bite for real outside of sport. Also, didn't want anything whatsoever to do with a suit. You can learn alot from them, because sport trainers do know alot about dog training, however, just noting to you personality differences that could occur if your more concerned with real and practical training or reality based sport training.
I see why you have 5 stars. This is exactly what i am looking for, the apprenticeship that is. Does he often take on apprenticis? Tarheel.... i think i saw that link here. I honestly dont think a grand for one year is bad depending on the training and trainers.
As far as getting a dog it all depends if i am living off post or on post. And honestly latly i have been thinking about getting a rescue pitbull dog that has been in fights (if your asking why, i saw some photos and thought even if the dogs have had problems in the past they should at least spend the rest of there days in a peacefull home, but im not a complet bleeding heart i am also intrested in seeing how trainable these dogs are after the horrable things that have happend to them)
