Of course its an overveiw of everything I mentioned I am certified in. (I am certified by the school, and they are state accredited) 6 weeks-10-12 hours per day. To become certified in easch category there are written and physical tests. Good trainers come with experience over time. IMO, I think 2 years for dog training is ridiculous. I can only imagine how much that costs. Just curious, why the bad rep on the school?? I will try to read the old threads. I thought the school was excellent. Alot of information in a short period of time. I have never had any complaints by any of my previous clients. I don't even advertise, my business was built on word of mouth.Mike, you signed your post narcotics, what exactly does that mean??

And BTW, I am new to the forum, so give me a break. I thought he was looking for a school to go to, so I posted my info there. If I am posting incorrectly, let me know...and not with your snide comments, please.

Lisa,
I honestly don't know anything about your school so i cant make any comments one way or another but i think any school that certifies you in that many subjects in that little time is kind of off. Now if its a overview i can understand but something you go to get certified then i think that is way to fast. Thats just my opinion. If you use the search function i am sure you can find some subjects on the school.
I sign my posts Narcotics because my dog is trained in patrol and narcotics. I guess i should put the patrol part in there too then :-D

"Just curious, why the bad rep on the school??"
My take on the poor rep that the school has among serious trainers is from experience - I have yet to meet a graduate from there that deserved any of the many "certifications" that the school awards it's graduates.
The school produces ok pet trainers - and there's not a thing wrong with that. But for the graduates to be trying to train others in serious fields like detection, personal protection, or police service work is just crazy.
I'll give an example of one of my many encounters with a graduate from National K9.
There was a graduate that sent themselves up as a "training school" in the Greater Atlanta area several years ago. They advertised every type of training under the sun, and did a lot of advertising locally and via the internet ( which was fairly new then ). They heavily advertised protection training and police work, so myself and four other handlers from different departments went for a "training session".
Well, it wasn't pretty - the graduate certainly didn't have the knowledge or handler skills to control serious dogs in any protection scenario that you'd care to name. Their skill did not match all those "certifications" that were proudly hung on the wall.
We left in disgust and within six weeks the trainer closed the website and their school and moved out of state.
I've been having encounters like that with National's graduates since the mid 1980's. I'm sure the school has graduated some good folks ( and you could well be one of them ) , I just haven't met them yet, but no matter what I'm going to have to say that the school's course work in the area of protection and serious dog work leaves much to be desired.

Will,
I agree with you 1000% that a recent graduate of NK9 does not have the experience to teach serious fields like detection, personal protection, or police service work. In fact that is why i attended the school was to be certified in those areas. However, when I got to the school and began my training the instructors and owner of the school were totally up front & honest with me saying I would not be proficient to teach those areas & that it was in my best interest to become a police officer to receive the in depth training I would need. I don't feel the poor trainers you have encountered should be a reflection of the school. Just because you are certified in something by no means makes you an expert. It is the experience you gain over time. That is why I joined this forum, to benefit from all your experiences in these training areas. (I will post my questions in the police K9 area.) Hopefully one day I can change your opinion of Nat K9.
