Having a dog with a 'pink nose' (lack of black pigment), I can tell you that a sunburn is very unlikely. A burn maybe. Sunburn doubtful.
Dogs with light noses can in fact get sunburned. I know someone who is dealing with this issue as we speak. Her vet recommended that she tattoo the dogs nose black to avoid this reoccuring issue. Just FYI.
To the OP, I do hope you get it figured out...why did you not want to keep your dog on the run of antibiotics?
I did say unlikely. Usually sunburns affect the bridge of a dog's nose ( not the nose itself), if they are light haired, or have thin hair there in my experience.
My post saying sunburn was unlikely was refering to the fact that the op's dog seemed to have black pigment. Also I was refering to experience form my breed which I will admitt may differ with different breeds.
Every year on our Toller breed list many new owners pose the question if they should use sunscreen on their pinked nosed Tollers. Breeders from all over the US, Australia, Canada and Europe say that they do not generally have issues with burnt noses and have had many generations of Tollers living long lives hunting, spending long days in the water and galavanting outdoors without using sunscreen and not suffering more than some freckling of the nose long term. There are some Tollers with black pigment, but most do not have it. I have not heard of anyone having to have their dog's nose tatooed. Note I am not talking about albino dogs. This is the kind of nose I was refering to:
Thanks for the FYI and I would love it if you could PM me some details of your friend's case, as I have a light nosed dog/breed that is outdoors a lot, I would like to know the circumstances and what to look for, just in case

I think that even though a solid tattoo can give some protection from UV rays, skin with a tattoo can burn, and, in fact, can lose the tattoo if it burns bad enough and peels.
OTOH, mine is kind of old info. Maybe there's some breakthroughs ......
Michele, out of curiosity, what breed of dog is that?
I've never heard of nose tattoos, learn something new everyday! I was overly prepared when I got my albino dobe, with sunblock and doggles (dog goggles for his eyes) and very careful about taking him out in summer but it never ended up mattering to be honest, he wasn't bothered in the least (and thanked me once I stopped making him wear the ridiculous goggles and smearing goo all over him haha!).
I do think the amount of hair a dog has is paramount and he was very well coated for an albino dobe (or blue or fawn) but it sounds more to me like something bacterial in the case of the original poster especially due to the fact they have the dog out of the sun much.
Michele,
I have had her on two rounds of meds and just do not think it is good to constantly feed her meds that's why I put them on only raw diet, when we go to the vet she will probaly get the meds again.
P.S. She has a very black nose.
I am going to take her to the vet on Monday. Thanks for all the input and suggestions. As I said she is a rescue and although she has come along great she was not in the best of health when I got her. (Missy) dogs name
I have never seen this happen to a dogs nose.

I did know of a dog with skin coming off of the nose. A young-ish GSD who, as I recall, was diagnosed with an unusual, but treatable, bacterial or fungal infection. It took a little bit of time but medication cleared it up.
