Another good possibility would be a standard poodle. Yes, I know, you're picturing a foo foo show dog but poodles are actually sporting dogs and you don't have to have it clipped into the show clip. You can keep it in the sporting clip.
They don't shed, and many allergic people don't have a problem with poodles. Plus they are intelligent and reasonably easy to train.

PLUS....Standard Poodles can make great hunting dogs
(if your into that)......I see more and more of them during Pheasant Season when the out of town hunters come in.

Boglen Terriers (Boston Terrier X Beagle)...
Lol...Debbie, are you serious
I am just trying to imagine what they look like.....
They look like a little pitbull or a boxer. Black and white or brindle and white. They won't chew on your kids or the neighbor, maybe the neighbor's cat...

I may be a little biased, but I LOVE English Springer Spaniels. 40-50 lbs. If you want more activity level, go for a field-bred dog, if you want less activity level, go for a show-line dog. Either way you're gonna get a great companion. Only downside is the grooming, but if you've got a Shih Tzu you're probably used to trips to the groomer, etc.
Springers are very smart and love to please. They have a great on/off switch; my girl doesn't care if she's snoozing on the couch all day or if we're out on a hike or doing agility. Kids love them -- I got Tessie when I was eight, maybe nine? She puts up with EVERYTHING, too -- ear pulling, kicking, my klutzy mom tripping over her, etc. without a bat of an eye.
If you are interested, feel free to drop me a PM. Depending on your location I may be able to point you to a good breeder in your area.

Hmmmm...I'm curious, which one are you saying will chew on the kids & neighbor? The PB, Boxer or both?

They look like a little pitbull or a boxer. Which? Those 2 breeds don't look alike. They won't chew on your kids or the neighbor, maybe the neighbor's cat... You really don't even want me to comment on this asinine comment.

They can have different shaped faces, some have longer noses more like a pit, some have a shorter nose more like a boxer. They don't look exactly like either one.
They are very friendly and gentle with people. They do have prey drive so if you DON'T train them NOT to they will chase the neighbors cat or wild rabbits, etc, etc. I don't approve of allowing dogs to kill cats, sorry if it came off that way.

Awww, come on you guys, I think she was joking about the whole chew on your neighbor/kid thing........lighten up a little.....please?????
Of course PB's and Boxers do not look alike, but when you mix breeds they can look a little like either parent.......
Not that I agree with designer breeds, nor would I get one, but I think they sound hilariously cute......
Someone wanted help with getting a dog in a household that has allergies, so, can we get back on topic for him?
It's all good Debbie, just that "designer" breeds and jokes about PB's and Boxers eating kids hit a chord here on this board....
His thread has been seriously hijacked. (I am at fault also)

Saying they don't chew on the neighbors' kids implies that other breeds do, and it's a dumb statement. If anyone is ever going to make an impact on the public image of PBs, dog people, especially need to refrain from "jokes" about them eating children. JMO.
Carol-I'm perfectly light. Just couldn't let that go.
