Man you guys in the States have it great for feeding raw!! .29 a lb for chicken quarters!! Try here we consider a good deal if you can get them for .99 a lb and as for beef, even soup/marrow bones are expensive. I did luck out with one butcher and can get chicken frames after deboning the breasts, so there's still a good amount of meat on them for 1.00 a lb and the butcher keeps a good supply of them and he'll grind them for free. Our Walmarts don't sell fresh meat yet but maybe that will change
Hello all. I'm getting my 2nd working pup (1st tonight and will begin him on a raw diet as well. I'll be going thru these posts like crazy for more info on it. However, as I do, can you help me with if I begin with chickens (I'll break it down for a pup in the beginning) is it ok for a pup to eat bones yet??? Thanks in advance for any help given. Have a great day all.
whole chickens are fine for your pup. I started my last pup on whole chickens that I quartered at 9 weeks. In addition the whole chicken I added some chicken trim since the whole bird is about 25% bone. The main concern is to keep a single protein source until the dog is adjusted, this is especially true if the puppy was fed kibble. Some dogs have no problem with variable protein sources right from the begining. Chicken meat and bones are very easy to digest and are not as rich as beef heart or lamb making it an excellent meat to introduce raw.
I did wings, necks, and backs with our puppy and she devoured them. Just make sure that yours doesn't swallow them and not chew first. As was pointed out by Jonathon, you may want to add a little more meat since the cuts I mentioned are alot of bone...ground turkey or ground beef works well.
Be prepared for his/her stomach to have a few days of adjusting going to the bathroom...just make sure they don't dehydrate with very loose stools or watery stools.
Other than that, just follow Ed and Cindy's menu plan and you'll have a VERY happy puppy!
