I have great success using massage with Arnica oil for sore muscles on my hard working hubby. It usually clears the pain of sore muscles overnight. If it is especially painful two treatments do the trick. Since my man isn't as hairy as your dogs you might have to shave the area or use LOTS of oil to get enough on the skin. You could also give them some homeopathic Arnica. If you don't use the oil just slide your fingers over the hair (easier on the Dobie than a GSD) as best you can without pulling it too much.
If you aren't good at massage make sure you don't rub or put pressure on the bones (common, painful mistake). Run your fingers down the muscle with the grain, down the length of it. Start soft and gradually increase the pressure. If you find a firm spot, that is not over a bone, in the muscle you can use your thumb to apply steady pressure to it and it will usually soften, be careful because those spots are also very tender. When they finally soften the whole muscle will often relax.
When your dog or your hand has had enough finish by doing the massage strokes over the area you have worked but use a light touch a few times to help the muscles stay relaxed.
Also when massaging the upper and middle parts of a limb make sure that when you finish you lightly "pull" all the tension out through the ends of the fingers or paws with your hands sliding down the limb. If you do that the whole arm (or leg) will feel lighter and better. If you have never had a massage with that done you can't understand it, but it feels wonderful when that last step is done. For me, and any person I've asked about it, the hand goes from a heavy bloated feeling to light and slightly tingly.
If the injury is under the shoulder blade the massage will still help by increasing the circulation to the area.
Ice will help reduce inflammation, heat will make it worse.
Just an update. She's doing much better, and it's just the first week. I'll not let her fool me into letting her play hard, but she's walking around the house, not including the stairs. She never liked them much anyways.
She's got a couple kongs to have one freezing while she's entertained with another. I've given her little rub-downs which she melts for.
I forgot to look for the oil over the weekend, apartment shopping kept me pretty busy.
