Angela - thanks, I wish I found this website 3 months ago when I first got my pup.
Thanks Donna, what if I just started feeding him an equal amount of chicken necks instead of the leg quarters? He doesn't seem to be in any pain right now but I may try adding some vitamin C to his diet as well.
How about glucosamine, does anyone know if this actually helps?

Angela, thanks for that raw diet website info.... It was quite accurate with all I have read and makes for a quick study when in doubt. I also e-mailed the link to my breeder.
I have had my two dogs on the raw for 8 months, and they are doing wonderful. I cannot beleive how white and strong their teeth look, as well as their muscle tone, energy, and happiness at meal times.
One question... have you found that your dog drinks less water on this diet? I live in Fla. where it is humid and they drink little water. I carry a large ziplock bag of ice chips when I take them for their run and they do consume all of that before we get home.
I also like the results of their waste becoming like dried compost, just grind it in the ground and it disintegrates like chalk. Makes for odorless cleanup! ha ha
Yes even living here in hot florida, they do drink alot less water and you can't beat the waste factor <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Yes, just replace the weight amount with necks. I don't know about glucosamine helping with panno, as glucosamine is to help replace cartlidge in joints and panno is a long bone disease. The Vit C helps with the inflammation of the white connective tissues during the fast growth spurts helping to ease some of the pain. Even if you are following your breeders advice on feeding your pup, please do your own research on BARF it's very important that you come to your own 'way' of feeding your dog... variety is the key in BARF diets.
My young male went through severe bouts of pano, thank goodness he's now pain free for the past 6 mos or so...hopefully he's past that stage now. My dogs also get BARF. Although he still went through the pano, at least I knew he was getting good food. At one point I tried Nutro lg. breed puppy...no difference. I understand the pano afflicted littermates, and wonder if it's genetic to a certain degree. Lazer did grow like crazy... some mornings he came out of his crate looking an inch taller than the night before.
I thought about the heredity factor too. The mother and grandmother of these pups are dogs that I have bred and neither of them or their littermates went through panno. I don't know about the sire of these pups as he was imported. I was surprised at seeing the symptoms as these pups appeared to be small and very slow growing. I was always calling them my "Apartment size GSDs". Compared to other pups the same age they appeared to be 2 months younger and it was the smallest most compact one that was first to go through it. Just goes to show us that nothing is definite in raising dogs.
Thanks again Donna and everyone for your input. I have replaced his usual chicken quarters with chicken necks -- we'll see how it goes.
The vet told me that he is growing too fast but my primary concern was (is) the extremely awkward way his right rear leg moves -- it's all over the place. This pup has yet to hit really severe pano like my last one did (my last pup would be completely lethargic for 2 weeks at a time). My current puppy will be 6 months old this week and he still seems to be able to get around without too much pain.

Mike, Is he putting any weight on the leg? I have only run into panno symptoms showing up in the front leg(s) not the rear. I know that panno can and does show up on any and/or all legs but usually starts in the front (usually being the key here) due to the long bones in the front, but on x-ray will show on all legs. Did your vet do x-rays to rule out anything else? How about checking ligaments? Or was the statement regarding growth right off and no further exam? Are you limiting his activity? Hope it goes away soon!!!
Our last bout is over... 4 days and gone...at least for now!
Donna, yes he is still using the leg (although lately he seems to be favoring using the other one a little). In my experience, pano effected the front legs as well. The vet suggested X-Rays to rule out HD but none have been done yet. My primary concern was and is HD; the dietary topic came up because my vet suggested the problem was growth related rather than HD. After squeezing his rear legs and deciding they were sore from growing -- her solution was to start feeding him a low quality food (specifically Ol' Roy) to slow down his growth.
