She was laying on the ground mouthing a toy, not moving, you took it and she bit you? I have no doubt in my heart that this was dominance/possessiveness.
I think the situation that Michele describes, and the one that I experienced with Macy, only really shows itself when the dog is excited and actively in drive.
I could be wrong about this part: A dog laying in the corner chewing an RMB (or breaking a toy(gosh, do I know exactly what you mean!)) isn't in drive. They're in the opposite of drive. They're in Lounge.

I agree with David. Teagan biting you wasn't an "accident" that happened while she was trying to grab back the toy before you got to it while in play drive, it was intentional. She was saying leave it alone, it's mine.

she wasn't even mouthing it anymore! it bugs me b/c what, i can't pick up a toy she stopped playing with?
i figured it was dominance/possessiveness as well, but then when i read michele's post i thought it was possible she was still worked up from playing. and knowing her, the dominance makes more sense, but you know, i always want to give her the benefit of the doubt for some reason.
(we are seeing some more possessiveness (i think) from her, but that's another post. guess what, i'm an object to possess!)
anyways, thanks for letting me hijack!

If we learn nothing else from this thread, I think the following information is crucial:
guess what, i'm an object to possess!)
Yep!
hehe. Sorry. :p In all seriousness though, someone (Connie S.?) Said something like "A lot of dog owners think their dog is being protective, when it's really just being possessive of its human!" You're right on, we all need to be aware of that and monitor it.
Also, Macy has a bone to chew on, but no toys to play with. I know you already know this, but it sounds like you need to do that with Teagan. Along with that Pack Structure DVD probably. Seems right when that DVD is released we all realize we need it. I say we have a viewing party. I'll bring the Kettle Corn and diet coke.

David, I didn't mean to be sarcastic. It was just stuff I have to remind myself of if not daily, then all to often it seems. I forget most people have a longer memory then me. No offence meant.
For what its worth Jennifer I'm with David, Sounds like a dominance issue from the way you described it.

hey hey hey now!
well, even oblivious me could tell she was being possessive when she wouldn't let luc come over to me (obviously i didn't allow that behaviour from her though).
i've realized i do a lot of the groundwork w/her, but i've started trying to play with her more (she does not have free access to toys, only when i provide them) and bond with her that way, and she's gotten a lot more house privleges this week that maybe were too much at once for her.
i have the pack structure dvd! now only if i had a computer that would play more than 5 minutes without freezing up :hmmph:
edit: randy, ha! i value the relatively scar-free body i currently possess, thank you very much! LOL ....when i read carol's thread, i was like 'she knows what she's doing....teagan would EAT me if i tried that.'

...and she's gotten a lot more house privleges this week that maybe were too much at once for her. I'm sure you're right about that because she hasn't been with you very long. That was one of my mistakes with Lear. He was behaving so well previously that I let him have more and more free time in the house; too much too soon, especially for a dog that wants to take over. I think to a dog like that, freedom equals power.

i think so. it's bad to admit, but luc got full house privleges almost immediately (i had a crate, but didn't keep him in it b/c i felt bad about how long he'd been in a shelter for....you know, a logical reason )
teagan did not, and still does not (i put the cats away when she's out, and she has to be on leash in the den as she is overly interested in the rabbits (and the cat's litter box, yuck)) have full house privleges, but i've been letting her out for long periods and within the confines of the hallway and kitchen, allowing her to move around not-leashed to me. all within a couple of days. i think she's going to have to be stuck to me at all out-of-crate periods for a while longer.
but yup sandy, it was the 'she'd been doing well' so i started letting her do more. perhaps not such a great idea.
