that's what i do, until the police show up. The park that the dog park sits in is a heavy drug area. "If you want to run your dogs, you gotta go in te dog park" over the loud speaker.....grrrr. so i leash them till i get out of their site up in the trails, and let them off again.
Ya, that's where I let her off leash Steven. There is a high school about 1.5 miles from my house, so we'll jog down there and go into 1 of their 2 fenced baseball fields and I let her fun free for 10-15 mins. Now, we both get a good sprint in. It works out great!
I have to admit that when I first heard of dog parks I thought, "what a great idea, especially for city dogs." I am very glad though that I never started going to them. While I'm sure some parks are better than others, there are just too many idiotic, irresponsible owners out there for me to want to take a chance at any dog park. It's much better, imo, to have a few well-trained dog pals that your dog can meet and play with than expose him/her to a bunch of strange dogs.
About small dogs I have to agree with everyone even though I am going from large dogs (collies and GSD/Malamute) to a small breed (Toy Fox Terrier) due to a lifestyle change. But, don't blame the dogs. Blame the owners and even many breeders. One of the reasons I chose the breeder I'm getting a pup from even though it's meant waiting is that she shows her dogs in confirmation, obedience, rally, and one male has even done weight pulling. She believes small dogs should be as well-trained as the largest Mastiff.
They're trying to ban dogs from fenced ball parks at the moment here. I'm not sure how that's going anymore at the moment. It's been months that they've been doing it.
Amanda - same around here but it's because of the mess the dog owners leave behind for the ball players/kids to step in.
I used to take my dogs to the ball diamonds but stopped because too many people walk their unleashed dogs in the park, who then run up to and along the fence and drive my dogs crazy. (This happens in my yard too since I back onto the park but it's worse in the ball diamonds.)
Better than the dog park though, where they can fight for real. City dogs don't really have a safe place to exercise. It kind of sucks.
