He was muzzled, on the table, terrified, had emptied his anals and two techs were holding him down. I held his head and stroked him, soothed him, and cried. They gave him a shot to put him to sleep so they could do the x-rays. I'm crying now again just thinking aboput it.
I would also get the x-rays from them to take with you to the new vet. I wouldn't let it hold me up, though, if they weren't open when the new vet could see you.
Next time, for x-rays, I would tell the vet about needing sedation this time.
And if you can, it's really good to try not to cry or be upset in front of the dog -- it's good, as hard as it is, to calm his fears as much as possible with upbeat and calm behavior and voice. (Yes, I do know how hard it is. It will be easier if you have it planned in advance, which wasn't possible that time.)
Does he seem to be hydrated?

I can't get him into a vet until monday unless I drive to the E-vet which is almost an hour away. If he isn't better tomorrow, I will.
I plan on keeping him on the bland diet again, no more kibble for sure. How long should I wait once he feels better before I add back any real food? And what should be the first thing I do give him?

He seems to be. His gums are pink, moist, the color returns quickly when I press on them

Do you have any pedialyte? I think that might be good for him, to make sure he isnt dehydrated. Did they give him anything for the pain he seems to be in?
Re-Reading this I really think he needs to be re-checked and if it were me I would do it ASAP.
This sounds like more than regular insestinal upset and i agree that a total Fecal, bloodwork and more imaging is a good idea, though pricey I know.

I don't have pediatyte, but could get some. The money issue is horrible. We have had a bad few months here, lots of medical bills for the humans, and this is killing me. but I will find a way to get him whatever he needs.

It sure sounds an awful like bloat, even if its mild and doesnt include torsion.
I just re-read again and he was better on the chicken and rice until he had a bit of the kibble again..sounds to me like it is an issue with this bag of food, whether the food has something wrong with it or his system just cant take it anymore for the time being who knows.
I would try baiting the water with some yogurt or broth, I make my husky yogurt/pumpkin frozen goodness in his kong or ice cubes or even a paper dixie cup. The cold seems to do well with their tummy and both canned pumpkin and yogurt help to balance the intestinal track.
But i would definately call Candidae and tell them what you suspect, They more than likely will ask you to send them the food on their dime and refund your money, whether or not they actually do anything after that is anyones guess.
Has he had any Gas-x tonight? If that is an option i would maybe give him some to help him be more comfortable, Mine seem to like a soft tummy and chest massage and it does relax them so that they make "windy" lol.

Yes, I gave him one about an hour ago. He was sleeping, then woke up, tried to get on the couch (he's not allowed) several times, layed back down, put his head down and whined for a few minutes. my daughter sat with him and stroked his head until he quit whining and fell asleep. now sleeping again.
It's funny cause he isn't exactly "sick" but he definitely isn't right either. No vomiting or diarhea, just discomfort and not wanting to drink. Not himself.

Ditto on the food, but keep some of it. (Don't use it.)
I agree that it sounds like bloat, and the vet's statement about it not looking like bloat needs explanation (for me). So does the diagnosis of gastro-enteritis with no fecal and no bloodwork.
I would not feed him tonight with his recurring symptoms.

Poor baby, but he is lucky to have a good human mamma to take care of him.
the restlessness and amount of gas in his tummy are what make me think of bloat.
Next time you go to the store you might want to get some plain pedialyte, I use it when I even suspect dehydration, and to help prevent it when I know there is a risk.
When you go to the new vet make sure they test for Giardia and Coccidia in his poo, just to rule them out. I cant believe they didnt the firt time!
ETA: once they bloat they are much more prone to it, and if he did in fact bloat last week even without the torsion, he very likely could have mildly bloated again if the food is too rich or tainted in some way.

I won't be feeding him tonight. Bloat was my initial fear, but the vet kept saying no, she didn't think so. You could see the little dark squiggles in his intestines, and a dark area in his stomach that she said was gas, but she still didn't think it was bloat.
