My remedy.. I'm a hard a#%. My dogs are not allowed outside of the room I am in. Never out of sight. Easier said than done for some but I have been known to walk around the house with 4 dogs tied to my waist or belt loops or around my ankles. No dog has run of the house, ever.
I am glad I am not the only one that is a hard ass......no dogs alone in any room......I need my money to buy dog stuff, not extra groceries and new furniture.....

Read this. I haven't tried it yet, but Ridgebacks are notorious for counter surfing, it seems to be in their genes, so I'm gonna when he feels better and gets back to his old shinanigans.

I did the can monster
it worked but it worked too well for my ninny
he shied away from dr. pepper cans for quite some time!
My solution is to defrost in the oven (with it off) rather than on the counter and the dogs are no longer allowed in the kitchen even though loki did not counter surf anymore.
It is my cats dog free zone, I also work in the dining room which is adjacent to the kitchen and there are too many chemicals for the dogs or kids to be in there.
I dont want to be tripping over paws and tails while i try to cook or Pour a bucket of caustic fresh soap
The problem is that the cats are ten times worse than the dog ever was. I went in tonight to put away leftovers after dinner and there was half a hamburger missing!!!
We have one of those baby gates that you can swing open for people to go through. I like it.

Two things you may try, first you say the Dog is Fat and always acts like it is starving to death, does the Dog need worming, because a dog that needs worming will act as if it is hungary all the time.
Secondly you can bait some food to make it unpalatable to the Dog.
Like Spray Ed's bitter apple on it and keep doing it if the dog takes it and does not eat it then after a week or so it may, if it has any sense catch on to the fact it is no good it pinching of the counter if it cannot eat the food

Well to set things straight and you have a very dominant agressive dog that will blatenty get on the counter in your presence and will grab food out of you hand. You definety do not want to go toe to toe with this dog because this dog is 100 plus pound Rot that you just brought in that attacked it's owner and will not respond to anything. Yes I would run a wire and shock box.
Mouse traps didn't work can monsters didn't work. The strongest shock collar I could find wouldn't phase this dog. So the wire and shock box came out. It was a small one for smaller animals and not the one used for large livestock. So since my use of this device made the dog think the counter zapped him and he didn't direct his aggression to me he didn't get euthanized and I didn't go to the hospital. It only took once. The more you let a dog get away with something the more they will do it and the smarter they will get going after the prize. Yes this is an extreme example. I ended up with this dog because the owner tried to make a guard dog out of him the wrong way and I wasn't about to join him in the hospital.
If you have seen the damage inflicted I have seen caused by dog bites and powerful dogs, because of things like food aggression, and what it does to the human body I think you would change your attitude about my post.
As far as defrosting food it is much better to defrost in the fridge or soak what you are defrosting in cold water. Remind me never to eat at your house. What are you going to do soak the meat in bleach? Oven tempertures or meat when properly prepared does not always get hot enough to kill bacteria and viruses.
Robbin's post also came across strong.
Sincerely,
JC |

dogs and kids belong outside and the wife in another room when I'm cooking. The counter surfing is just a matter of keeping the area clear, altho I had my two psycho bitches take the "Kong" and "Cuz" toys out of the drain board after I washed them when I stepped out for a moment

Wife in another room indeed and Kids outside,
Back in the stone ages, If your wife is treated as your equal then she should be in the Kitchen helping you and your kids innother room playing'
Sorry your post did not impress me, quite the opposite it did not need to be said at all, and if this post offends, then its too bad

If Dennis is anything like some people are when cooking, I'm sure his wife prefers being in another room. Besides, I think he's just being a bit sarcastic in his humor. I'm a woman (obviously from my name) and I prefer that everyone stay out of the kitchen when I'm cooking also. Nothing to do with equality or lack of it.
Yes, meat should not be thawed out on the counter but should be thawed in the fridge. And yes, I've done it the wrong way many times also without a problem. But, all it takes is one time of sending people to the hospital (or worse) so it's a really bad idea to do so.

ditto in my house about the kitchen and laundry room being the only dog free zone when they are loose. My cats are all baby gate jumping pros, for a while, in their mad scramble to get to te safe zone, they would miss the gate.....
But now bart can jump gates, so i move it up higher. Then Maya can fit under.
And now that capone is where, he leans his heavy butt on them and just plain knocks them down.
I remedied this by not having them all out at the same time, so i can pay more attention. When there were 2 running around likt idiots in my livingroom, it's hard to notice the silent plotting dog at the gate......
but tell you, those cats can rip through a bag of meat in no time, and they know full well that they are cats, and above pack structure, and will brazenly ignore me at times...
Funny but scary story....
the dogs know to wait in the other room while i am chopping up meat. Well, one of my cats kept jumping on the counter while i was taking a meat cleaver to a whole chicken. I tossed him down abput 10 times(he's a kitten, so he doesnt get the no counter rule yet). Well, i thought he got it, and he looked like he was walking away, so i continued to chop, nd out of no where, there is kitten! I nicked his nose with the meat cleaver!!!!!
I came close to chopping off his head!!!
It was totally his fault, and he barely had a cut, but i felt like crap.
but he never counter surfed again...

My puppy will surf in the kitchen if given the chance. However, he is getting a lot better, because 1) if the random time he does walk into the kitchen if I'm typing or doing something, I will tune into the "kitchen sounds" and verbally correct if he sounds to be on two feet.
ANd 2.) Generally speaking, the pup is within eyesight, in the same room with me...I'm developing into the pup's most interesting thing! (finally)
I keep any meat thawing down in the sink which will afford a few extra seconds if the dog is tempted to grab and run.
