Have you thought about fresh food? Or, if you can't, maybe a better kibble? Can I give you a list?

Connie, I notice you said, plus beet pulp, I thought I read this was not good for dogs? I know we feed it to the race horses everyday.
The only thing in all those top nine ingredients that's good for dogs is meat.

Absolutely, please do!
and yes, I have thought of raw, infact, I used to feed raw chicken to my last GSD, the only thing that worries me, is getting the right amount of nutrients, calcium/phosphorous ratio, etc. If you have a raw diet, I'd love to hear it.

Yeah, sorry but you need to get those expressed. However you can do it yourself at home. It really is easy to do (mostly). Just ask your vet how and they can show you.
Just saw the links Connie posted, both are very good so check them out if you have not already. And FYI sometimes they can not be expressed from the outside, in that case it's time to put on ye old latex glove and poke a finger in there. You just need to make a hook with your index finger, feel for the sac on the side and then put pressure on the sac whilst curling your finger toward you. Do it externally if you can! It's a better experiance for you and your dog!

Also, if you would like book recommendations, there's a list in those links, but you can also ask here. There are some from the true pioneers, some with extensive "why" background, some that are short and to-the-point for those who know "why" but want a how-to that can start them today.
Also, the Leerburg sample 2-week menus are extremely useful for a beginner (or anyone else), because there are actual photos of bowls of food, ready to hand to the dog.
I recommend to many people that they just follow that sample menu exactly the way it's written for a couple of weeks and get a solid picture in their minds of what a well-balanced diet looks like. Then, branching out with different protein sources, etc., is much less scary, because you have a feel for the bone-meat ratio of prey.

Thanks Matthew, sounds like fun! I'll get the vet to do it the first time, and try it myself from there on in... ugh
Beautiful dobe you have!
Lots of good reading thanks Connie, unfortunately I just bought a new bag of Nutro.

That I have! Smart people here.
Is feeding raw cheaper do you think? I pay almost sixty dollars for approximately 3 weeks worth of kibble.

Actually I have been keeping track and so far to feed 3 dogs and 2 cats raw, including all the supplements costs me about 110.00 a month. The dogs are 80-something pounds and 1 is just 30 pounds.....the cats are smallish. I figure it's like adding one teenage boy to the grocery budget!
