Don't get me wrong, I am not claiming they don't shed! I realize the fuzz that can come out of the most meagerly coated GDS could make sweaters for a whole lotta kids
Sitting with a hot water bottle on my lap as I type...so cold here at present...
Phoenix my mix girl has somewhat long hair nothing like a GSD.
But she did shed a lot last year not so much this year.
But I got her in late winter as a puppy but when we made the change to raw. She does not shed as much.
Now I can vacuum once to two times instead of 3 to 4 times.
My dog does not have an undercoat. Her short coat looks beautiful since raw and she also stopped doo-doo dining, but she still sheds about the same. She's been on raw since May '07.
Speaking of supplements, just a side note: sometimes it's noted that our dogs eat better than we do. Case in point - when I take down the bottle of Vit C and E to give him, do I grab some for myself? No, I do not.
Not to hijack, but this made me laugh. I yelled at my bf for taking an Ester C 1000mg out of the cabinet. I said "Put that back! That's Caleb's" He said "Tough $hi+" and took it anyway. Yes, Sandy, I know exactly what you mean...I spend about 10 mins every morning doling out everyone's specifically-tailored supplements...and then I grab a cup of coffee and head to work.
I notice less full coat "blowing" but I don't notice much less shedding. Then again, I've never had a GSD who ate dog food, so maybe I shoud just shut up, since my comparison ability is lacking.
I am wondering if it could have something to do with fat content? I think my dog had more fat in his raw diet last winter, and I think he had more undercoat. The food I have this winter is VERY lean.
Would you say the average kibble has more fat than a diet like the Leerburg raw one, without the skin on the chicken for example...
