P.S. If you could weigh a chicken neck or get the weight off the package, that would be useful. The numbers are smaller with this size dog, and I can't "eyeball" the muscle meat.
My sister had the same problem with her doberman female, she would not gain weight no matter what she fed that dog. The vet said that he believed it was because the dog had a high level of anxiety (basically bad nerves) and she worried away all her calories. I wasn't sure if I believed him, and then I saw Cesar Milan say the same thing.....Don't know if it's true or not, but it's food for thought.
Hey, that might be something to consider because my dog seems to exhibit a certain degree of anxiety displayed as excitement and/or nerves (I think common hyper-ness from being a poodle too).
Anyway, I have added some chunk meat at lunchtime and things are going really well so far. It's been too short a time to notice any weight gain but his poops are good and he's eating well.
Oh, I estimate the chicken necks to average about 1/2 pound for 3 necks (I bought 60 necks for $10 dollars at .99cents/pound, that would mean that 6 necks were 1 pound). I will try and get some individual weights. I think he should be getting about 3/4 pound of food a day, or a bit more, right?
Thanks again everyone!
My mom kept berating me because my pup was quite skinny. She was so afraid she'd miss something she wouldnt eat. Is the pup not eating all it's food? If so, what worked for me was putting the pup in a crate with the food for a bit - nothing else to distract her so she ate everything.
I think the only thing was I was told by a vet I was lucky - most people have a hard time preventing puppy obesity, it's better for their growing bodies to be trim, but still one worries...
I think in one week you would see some weight gain, but my experience is with kibble fed dogs, not raw.
I have noticed with diet switching (in the case of allergies or coat condition in poor-diet dogs) results can be noticed usually by the one week mark, and when I change portion sizes for my dogs I can usually notice a weight loss/gain starting at about one week.
So you should see just the very start of some more flesh on his bones. I would think. Just enough to be noticeable.
